NYPD Emerald Society News/Events     2008, 2007, 2006, 2005, 2004

December, 2009 General Meeting:
The NYPD Emerald Society held the December 7, 2009 meeting at St. Andrew RC Church in downtown Manhattan. As President Timothy Bergin called the assembly to order, he asked for a moment of silence. Members stood with their heads bowed, recognizing the 68th anniversary of the day of infamy, December 7, 1941. That sneak attack by the Japanese, on Pearl Harbor and our American way of life will always remain among the darkest of days in our country's history. While recalling our brave heroes of WWII, Emerald members also stood in tribute to our patriots in todays military. Honoring the fighting spirit and sacrifice, taking place in Afghanistan, Iraq and other hostile parts of the world, everyday by our armed forces. After prayers the membership followed with a stalwart reciting of the Pledge of Allegiance. As this year rapidly comes to a close, this marked the final meeting of President Bergin's two year term. On January 1, 2010 Bergin will turn over the reign to President-elect Richard Wall. As all Past Presidents know, their time in office is fleeting. In his opening remarks Bergin reminded the crowded room that the new Membership Cards were available. Board Officers Dennis Gallagher and Chris Doyle were busy by the entry door selling the newly minted cards. The colorfully designed edition, salutes our NYPD Emerald Society Pipe & Drum Band on their 50th Anniversary. It features four of the Bands historic emblems, which they have used over the course of their five decades of music and march. With two emblems on each side of it, a 9-11 Red Ribbon adorns the top of the card underscoring our NYPD vow to "never forget." Our 2010 President Richard Wall's name is on the front, along with 1st Vice President Sean Patterson, who remains "excused-deployed US Navy." Bergin called on HS Scholarship Chairman Tom Glynn, who briefed members on the January 16, 2010 exam at the Police Academy. The test is for member's children currently in the 8th Grade that will be attending HS next September 2010. Members must be up-to-date with dues paid for 5 consecutive years for eligibility. Winter Weekend Chairman Tom Sullivan followed with news on the February 11-15, 2010 Catskill trip. He stated full details are pending at this time, for the Presidents holiday weekend. News on the rates and resort will appear very soon in the Emerald website. Next up was Queens North VP Timmy Black who announced his upcoming campaign "Mustache for Kids." Timmy once again has started growing this year's model of facial hair, in an effort to raise money for children battling cancer. He raised thousands last year and his goal is to surpass that great amount by a wide margin. Timmy always takes his share of good-natured kidding, especially as he sports a mustache every Irish kid making his Confirmation would be proud of! Please take a look at his Long Island Chapter's website www.m4kli.com and see how you can assist with this truly deserving cause. As the meeting drew towards its conclusion President Bergin thanked everyone for their support. He then gave a special thanks to the Board for all their good work these past two years. In return he received a loud round of applause from all in attendance. Out of town and surprise visitor was Past President of the Arizona 10-13 Sean McConville (ESU-TK5). He picked up his 2010 card and talked old times with fellow retiree Chris Ryan and Tom Nihill from the Irish Tourist Board. It looked like he did a little Christmas shopping for his big brother Brian McConville, another E-man residing out west. Early on in the evening, the well attended gathering of Emeralds placed some pressure on caterer Tommy Stagg and his staff. The chow-line formed early near the hot buffet tables with hungry men at the ready. It looked like the hot dog line at Nathans in Coney Island on a 4th of July afternoon. Fortunately the trays were deep and everyone ended up well fed. Finally in closing, Merry Christmas wishes and Happy New Year salutations are extended to all our Emerald Society members, families and friends!

A well placed Emerald gift under the Christmas tree is sure to bring out those smiling Irish eyes on December 25th!

2009 DELEGATES DINNER
On Friday evening November 20, 2009 the NYPD Emerald Society hosted our Annual Delegates Dinner. Board Officers, past presidents, delegates and other invited guest enjoyed a good time at the Hudson Council, Knights of Columbus hall in Woodside, Queens. President Timothy Bergin welcomed all and thanked the delegates for their support. After enjoying a plentiful hot-buffet, the group was serenaded by our Pipes & Drums. With the Bands sizable contingent, Chairman Donnie Rogers kidded "welcome to Band Appreciation Night!" Some of our long time members recalled the days not so long ago when it was a jam-packed Castle Harbour Inn up in the Bronx. Back then every command in the NYPD sent an Emerald delegate or two to the Bronx's landmark. Although attendance was lighter on this night it did not curtail our Emerald spirit of fraternity. Hopefully more delegates will take advantage of this night in their honor, it is well worth the ride to Queens. The night's finale was a raffle with numerous winners. After a cash grand prize, bottles of cheer were awarded. Soon-to-be Trustee Carrie Reilly handed out the prizes to all the smiling Irish faces that held winnings ducats. The night ended with exchanges of Happy Thanksgiving wishes!

IRISH ECHO PROFILES EMERALD SOCIETY
VP GEORGE ANDERSON

In the newspaper's November 18-24, 2009 edition, there's a terrific article on our own Vice President of Headquarters George Anderson. The Echo's Peter McDermott uncovers Anderson's early years before coming on the job. The interview continues with his rise through the ranks, leading to his current position as the Commanding Officer of the Police Academy. Anyone who knows George Anderson might find a few surprises in this chronicle. Irish Echo's story

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE WORLD SERIES CHAMPION NEW YORK YANKEES
The NYPD Emerald Society salutes the Yankees for a great season filled with 103 exciting wins. Their superb play continued through the playoffs as they defeated the Minnesota Twins and the Los Angeles Angels. With great teamwork the Bronx Bombers culminated their memorable run by knocking off last year's champs the Philadelphia Phillies. Speaking of teamwork, it was another outstanding performance by the NYPD coordinating the Yankees' Victory Parade up the "Canyon of Heroes."

November, 2009 General Meeting
The NYPD Emerald Society held the November 2, 2009 meeting at St. Andrew RC Church in downtown Manhattan. Among the items on the night's agenda was the Board Election. An unopposed board was nominated at last month's meeting in the Bronx. As a formality Election Chairman Bill Dwyer presented the names of the candidates, one ballot was cast and the 2010-2011 slate was officially voted in. Our President-elect Richard Wall will take over on January 1, 2010. 1st Vice President Sean Patterson will continue in that position, he is currently deployed with the US Navy and we anxiously await his return. Danny Murphy will become treasurer and Karyn Keenan will serve as financial secretary rounding out the Executive Board.

In other important business, President Timothy Bergin announced the winner of the NYPD Emerald Society Patrolman Patrick J. O'Connor Medal for Valor, Lieutenant Kevin Gallagher of Brooklyn South Narcotics is this year's recipient. Bergin presented the distinctive gold medal along with an engraved plaque testifying to Gallagher's gallantry. Previously Kevin was bestowed with the NYPD Medal of Valor, during the recent Medal Day ceremony at Police Headquarters. After Gallagher received a loud applause, Rich Wall read the narrative report to the membership describing the police action leading to this recognition (Download the complete report). Once again the room was filled with a long applause as Wall finished the gripping account. Unfortunately members of the O'Connor Family were not in attendance. It is always that much more special when Mrs. Anne O'Connor and the rest of her clan present this prestigious award to an NYPD hero. Gallagher did have a group of his good friends on hand and they looked on proudly. The O'Connor Medal is awarded annually by our Society and it is always among the most exceptional moments a member will ever experience. The Emeralds will always honor the memory of Patrolman O'Connor recognizing his dedication to his family and his brothers and sisters in blue.

Besides our regular 50/50 drawing there was a Thanksgiving Turkey raffle. Three lucky winners might not have taken home any cash, but they did bag a frozen bird. Earlier in the day Past President John McLoughlin hunted down the unlucky birds at a local King Kullen. Bergin later reminded all of our delegates of the Delegates Dinner later in the month. On Friday evening November 20th they are invited to the Knights of Columbus, Hudson Council in Queens. The night serves as a token of gratitude for all their hard work. The "Mighty Quinn" from the Daily News sports page will be our special honoree. We are expecting some of his great humor to be shared with the membership. Looking to 2010, High School Scholarship Chairman Tom Glynn announced the exam date for current eighth-graders is Saturday, January 16th at the Police Academy. The meeting concluded with Bergin wishing everyone a Happy Thanksgiving!

Army Football at West Point, October 10, 2009
The NYPD Emerald Society returned to the United States Military Academy at West Point for a gridiron battle on Saturday, October 10, 2009. Our annual trip north up the Hudson River not only brought 255 Emerald fans but a strong dose of "Irish Luck!" The Army Black Knights, after four action packed quarters of exciting football, had an evenly tied score with the Commodores of Vanderbilt University. With the game in overtime the Black Knights were first to score and earned a triumphant victory. A well placed field goal broke the deadlock with a final score of 16 to 13. The packed house at Michie Stadium erupted with cheers as the pigskin split the uprights and the Cadets jumped for joy. The Black Knights may want to add the NYPD Emerald Society's "Shamrock & Shield" logo to their uniforms. The home team has been winners over the last few years that the Emeralds have visited the famous fortress by the Hudson. For a second year our group has been joined with a youth football team the Staten Island Lions. The players and their families have been a great addition and we hope they continue with us. The youngsters looked quite imposing as they put on a special halftime exhibition for the fans. During the scrimmage they executed some great plays on the historic Michie Stadium turf. The young Lions enthusiasm was as high as the surrounding mountain tops. We hear the next day the team playing under the name "NYPD Emerald Society Lions" had a big win.

Our tailgate party was situated right alongside the tranquil banks of the Hudson River. With the leaves just starting to change colors and a little bit of autumn chill the Emerald tent was positioned perfectly. The bright sun truly enhanced the colors of our two beautiful flags, both "Old Glory" and the "Tri-Colors" never looked better as they flew above the "Green & Gold" banner of the Emeralds. There was plenty of space outside the tent as the kids tossed a football and raced back and forth. The food inside the tent was plentiful and many enjoyed seconds. Whether sitting comfortably under the expansive make shift pavilion or catching the warmth of sun everyone appeared in good spirits. Chairmen George Anderson and Timmy Black relying on their years of prior experience put together another tremendous day. Timmy led part of the group that arrived by motor coach. The bus left earlier in the morning from Long Island's Wantagh Inn. After picking up more fans from the Park Bench Café in Brooklyn they took a scenic tour northward. With their bellies full they would later enjoy a fun filled return trip homeward. Most of the good food came from the renowned "Little Italy" of Monroe in Orange County. A nice touch was a decision by George Anderson, at the suggestion of Board Officer Scott Lloyd to donate the 50/50 Raffle earnings to the Lions football team. Ironically when the raffle was drawn Lions Coach Jimmy Durkin was the winner. The entire 50/50 pot will be used to sponsor next year's Lions. Other Emerald Board Officers assisting the committee were Jay Teahan, Pete Whalen, Eddie Patterson and Tom Sullivan. Our newest trustee, Pat Donohue also was quick to lend a hand. Emerald member Det. Pat Coghlan assisted with the beverages with his son Connor at his side. As an added treat, Chairman Anderson distributed complimentary cigars from his own "private-stock" of stogies. George was rewarded for all his good deeds a little earlier when the Lions presented him with a team cap and shirt thanking him for his support. Once again, the Army Team and the Emerald Team combined for a memorable October afternoon.

St. Patrick's Day Parade Grand Marshall Announcement
October 5, 2009

Members of the NYPD Emerald Society Board were on hand for the press conference announcing Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly as the Grand Marshall for 2010 St. Patrick's Day Parade. The Tuesday October 5, 2009 media event was held at the Park Avenue offices of the Irish Consulate. With many dignitaries gathered Parade Chairman John Dunleavy made the official announcement at the podium of a jam-packed room. Dunleavy stated "We are truly delighted that Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly has been unanimously selected as the 2010 Grand Marshall. He is a man who is beloved in the Irish-American community in the United States. He is an outstanding Irish-American who has devoted a huge amount of his considerable energy and charisma to building enduring and durable ties between Ireland and America and the rest of the world. We know his selection will be a widely popular one." Incoming Emerald Society President Richard Wall led our group to congratulate PC Kelly. From the NYPD unions were LBA President Tom Sullivan and SBA President Ed Mullins. NYPD "brass" included Chief of Department Joe Esposito, Chief Ray Diaz, Chief Kathleen Ryan and Chief Tom Sweeney. Bandmaster Brian Coughlan was joined by Pension Director Tony Garvey. Former PCs Robert McGuire and Richard Condon and former Mayor Ed Koch also stopped by. The current "Rose-of-Tralee" Ashling Colton of WFUV radio fame joined in for the great news. Everyone was certainly surprised to see Jennifer Lopez and her husband Marc Anthony in attendance. The couple are close friends and admirers of Mr. Kelly. The PC was happy to share his memorable day as he gladly posed for countless photos. His wife Veronica and his 2 sons Greg and Jimmy along with his brother Donald Kelly all looked on with immense pride. It is sure to be a grand day for all next March 17th, as the 249th St. Patrick's Day Parade is led up 5th Avenue by New York's "top cop."

October, 2009 General Meeting
The NYPD Emerald Society held the October 5, 2009 meeting at St. Barnabas High School, in the Bronx. President Timothy Bergin presided over a busy agenda which included some democracy, well-earned recognition and a history lesson. The next slate of Board Officers for the 2010-2011 term was nominated. Chairman of the nominating committee Bill Dwyer handled those duties quite capably. Robert's Rules were abided strictly and the slate was presented unopposed. Election night will be at our November meeting. Treasurer Richard Wall will take over the Emerald Presidency on January 1, 2010. 1st Vice President Sean Patterson will continue in his current position. Patterson was recently activated for military service. The Navy veteran is scheduled to return from his deployment later on next year. Next up President Bergin presented NYPD Emerald Society plaques to 5 members of our Pipe & Drum Band. The quintet was recognized for their longtime individual service to the Society. Jeff Baynon and Mike Rigney received a great round of applause, as they were called up and handed their awards. Three other Band honorees unfortunately were unable to attend. Richie Newman accepted for his father Vincent Newman, as well as for Phil Thompson and Mike Paul. The Band then reciprocated by playing a medley of Irish and patriotic songs. Also in attendance was Mr. Ian McGowan, he imparted a very enlightening talk on our NYPD forefathers. In the early part of the last century, a significant number of our policemen of Irish descent from NYC participated in many World Olympic Games. Many of these world-class athletes were medal winners. McGowan in his research found out that group was "Winged Fist" and they trained and competed locally in Queens. Their base was an outdoor facility known as Celtic Park. McGowan's slide-show included photos of trading cards from those bygone days that featured the NYPD competitors. The cops were nicknamed "The Whales" and many of them took part in the 1900 through 1924 Olympic Games. McGowan revealed a part of our long storied police history, which most of us had no knowledge of. Our members were left quite impressed by this lesson. For more information on Winged Fist and The Whales please visit the website: wingedfist.org. After some routine business reports the meeting concluded. Members enjoyed the rest of the evening especially the delicious menu from Tom Stagg Catering. The next meeting is in November and returns to Manhattan at St. Andrew.

September, 2009 General Meeting
more photos
The NYPD Emerald Society held the September 14, 2009 meeting at St. Andrew RC Church, in downtown Manhattan. It began as President Timothy Bergin welcomed everyone back from a lengthy summer respite. Our last meeting was way back in June. Then in a more serious tone President Bergin recalled last week's 8th Anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack on America. In the opening prayer our Chaplain Monsignor Martin Geraghty, remembered all those innocent souls that were lost, on that dreadful day, which we in the NYPD will never forget. Bergin followed up prayers, by reminding everyone of all our service men and women that continue to fight for our freedom. Then came some surprising news, 1st VP Sean Patterson has been activated with his Naval Reserve Unit. This would be Patterson's last Emerald meeting for an extended period of time. He is readying for some intense training stateside, before deployment to an overseas combat zone. This news certainly brought our concerns for our military personnel that much closer to home. Sean Patterson will be joining a roster of hundreds from the NYPD, who have bravely answered the call to duty since 9/11/2001. The rest of the evening Sean received well-wishes from his many friends in attendance. We will anxiously await his return to the NYPD and the Emerald Society Board, but most importantly to his loving wife Anaida and "his pride and joy" young Liam. We are sure Eddie Patterson, will keep us apprised of his brother Sean's patriotic service over the coming months. As the meeting went on Bergin called upon a couple of event chairmen for updates. Tom Cawley announced that the Bennett Scholarship applications were now being accepted, for currently enrolled college freshmen. For more info Tom can be contacted through our web site in the Board section. Next up was George Anderson, advising on our trip to West Point, for the Army football game versus Vanderbilt. Tickets are selling fast for the October 10, 2009 match-up. President Bergin finished by reminding the group that our next meeting will be at St. Barnabas HS in the Bronx, on Monday October 5th.

WINGED FIST ORGANIZATION ENDORSED BY NYPD EMERALD SOCIETY
The Emerald Society recently became aware of an organization operating in Queens called the Winged Fist Organization. This organization was founded by Ian McGowan. Mr. McGowan is a native New Yorker and a Masters Degree candidate in the City College of New York's history department, studying the Irish in Latin America. He currently resides in Sunnyside/Woodside, Queens in the Celtic Park apartments, on the very site of the former Irish-American Athletic Club's track & field. Mr. McGowan has been studying the Irish in the America's for more than twenty years, and for the past five years has been researching the athletes and accomplishments of the Irish-American Athletic Club (I-AAC.)

Of interest to the Emerald Society is that many of these members of the I-AAC were New York City Police Officers of Irish descent, and were Olympic athletes of note in the 1900, 1904, 1906, 1908, 1912 and 1920 Olympic Games. The NYPD athletes of the I-AAC won more than 25 Olympic medals for the U.S. Team. The Winged Fist Organization has profiles of many of the athletes on their website in the Galleries section. Some of the champion NYPD athletes featured on the Winged Fist website include: John J. Flanagan,William J. Keating, and Martin and Richard Sheridan. Additional pages, devoted to Matt McGrath and Pat McDonald are in the works.

The Emerald Society is supporting the efforts of this organization. Recently, Timothy Bergin, our president, sent a letter of support to Mr. McGowan. The letter reads, in part:

"The Winged Fist Organization is doing its best to preserve an important part of both American Irish, and New York Police history. The NYPD Emerald Society is a recognized fraternal organization of the New York City Police Department, established to help foster Irish heritage and tradition within the department, and also to promote and preserve the accomplishments that the Irish have made to law enforcement. As such, we commend the organization's founder, Ian McGowan, for his efforts to rekindle interest in these police officers, who were of Irish heritage, and represented the United States with such distinction during their Olympic careers. We encourage all to support this worthy cause."

In addition to adding a wingedfist.org link on our website, the NYPD Emerald Society has made a donation to support the work of the Winged Fist Organization and extended associate membership to its founder, Ian McGowan. We plan to invite Ian to make a presentation about the Wing Fist Organization and the NYPD athletes of the I-AAC to us at a fall Emerald meeting. In addition, we are pleased to recognize Chief Anderson, our Headquarters Vice President, who recently joined the Advisory Board of the Winged Fist Organization.

For members who are interested in learning more about this organization, or who would like to consider making a donation to support the effort, click on this link: wingedfist.org for more information. Also, the link below will bring you to a recent article in the Irish Emigrant about Ian and the Winged Fist Organization:

June, 2009 General Meeting

The NYPD Emerald Society held the June 1, 2009 meeting at St. Andrew RC Church, in downtown Manhattan. President Timothy Bergin opened the meeting with a prayer for Police Officer Omar Edwards, who tragically lost his life in the line of duty this past week. This would be the last meeting as our "summer break" begins. There are no meetings scheduled for July and August, as our members look forward to another great American summer. Hopefully all can find time to spend with their family and friends, whether at home or on the road. To enhance the occasion President Bergin set plans into order for this "Members Seisiun" meeting. Live music was provided by Matt Wahl of the 105 Precinct and Joe O'Brien of The Moonshiners Band. The duo with guitar and keyboard, along with Matt's superb vocals, put on a great show. With properly chilled Guinness, as an added amenity, members sat back and enjoyed the revue. Although there were some who chose to take to the dance floor. On the business side, members were advised of upcoming summer events. The agenda included, the 3-Day Golf Outing in the Catskills, Irish Night at Keyspan Park in Coney Island and the McNeely Golf Outing in Staten Island. With our next meeting not until a distant Monday, September 14th, everyone was more than willing to stay for an extended time. After all, with a copious supply of Guinness, as well as Matt and Joe's music and craic, it was difficult to say goodnight. Maybe with the luck-of-the-Irish that we all have, the good times will continue throughout the 100 plus days till our next meeting!

The NYPD Emerald Society held the May 4, 2009 meeting at St. Robert Bellarmine RC Church in Queens. The night featured our High School Scholarship award winners. Five boys and three girls along with their families were recognized for their academic achievements. President Timothy Bergin welcomed all to the special evening. Emerald Society Chaplain Monsignor Martin Geraghty also welcomed the group, as the host of this gathering. For the last few years, monsignor has served as the pastor of St. Robert Bellarmine and he has warmly opened the parish hall's doors to the Emeralds. 1st Vice President Sean Patterson introduced each scholarship winner to the audience. They then proceeded to the stage where they were presented with an Emerald Society plaque by President Bergin and Msgr. Geraghty. Scholarship Chairman Tom Glynn also assisted with the presentations. Glynn does an excellent job organizing and overseeing the many tasks that come with the HS Scholarship program. This year over forty 8th grade students sat down for the January examination at the Police Academy. The lovely nuns from St. Francis De Sales School conducted the test. Special thanks were also extended by President Bergin, to our loyal friends at The Centurion Foundation, The NY Law Enforcement Foundation and The Police Reserve Association for their donations. These organizations have a long history of supporting the NYPD Emerald Society. After numerous photos were taken of our honorees, the Pipe Band made a grand entrance into the hall. Following a few sets of songs, the Band marched off to a round of appreciative applause. A sense of pride filled the room throughout the family friendly night. When the business portion of the meeting resumed, members were advised on upcoming summer events. Among some of the offerings now being planned is the Tailgate Party at the Brooklyn Cyclones Game versus the Staten Island Yankees, scheduled for Thursday, July 30th. In August the McNeely Golf Outing at the South Shore Country Club in Staten Island and the 5th Annual Summer Getaway at the Friar Tuck Resort, July 9th-13th. Dates for the NY Yankees Game and the Fishing Trip will be announced shortly, keep checking our web site for updated information. From the Pipe Band, Bandmaster Brian Coughlan spoke on the Pipers Pursuit run in Rockaway set for Saturday, June 20th. Also announced was the Finbar Devine Golf Outing on June 19th at Riis Park. After enjoying a hot buffet dinner, great pipe music and Emerald Society fraternity, the honorees and their clans made their way home. The next meeting will be at St. Andrew Church on Monday, June 1st, and will include our Members Seisiun, with music and song from our members. To add to the night's ambience President Bergin has ordered Guinness on tap. Please join us for the final meeting before our summer respite.

April, 2009 General Meeting

The NYPD Emerald Society April 6, 2009 meeting was held at St. Andrew RC Church in downtown Manhattan. President Timothy Bergin opened the meeting on a solemn note, as our lost brothers in blue from across the country were remembered. Bergin requested that our assembly pray for the 7 Police Officers that were killed in the line of duty, in the last couple of weeks. Four officers were shot and killed in late March, in Oakland California. Tragically during this past weekend the violence continued, as three officers from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania were slain by gun fire. These two incidents certainly have sent shockwaves through our country's entire law enforcement fraternity. As President Bergin read off the names of these heroes the church hall fell silent. From the Oakland PD Officers Mark Dunakin, John Hege, Ervin Romans and Daniel Sakai were announced first, and then came the names of Pittsburgh PD Officers Eric Kelly, Stephen Mayhle and Paul Sciullo III. Our members then prayed a Hail Mary for these brave men and their grief stricken families. Our heartfelt condolences go out to them all.

As the meeting continued committee chairmen reported on a number of recently held events. 1st VP Sean Patterson spoke on the highly successful St. Patrick's Day celebration on March 17th. Thousands of our NYPD Emeralds enjoyed the 5th Avenue parade and later the Party-on-the-Pier. Danny Murphy reported on the Staten Island St. Patrick's Party that took place on March 8th at St. Peter's Farrell Hall. The family party was a great time for our members to enjoy the Island's day to be green. Regarding upcoming events Sean Patterson advised on the 3rd Annual William McNeely Golf Outing. The date is August 11th at the South Shore Golf Course in Staten Island. It's a terrific way to spend a summer afternoon. Board Officer Megan O'Malley addressed the crowd next. Megan will be participating in the Police Unity Tour on May 9th. She will be one of hundreds of bicyclist, who will make a 4-day charity ride from NYC to Washington DC. Megan is riding in memory of the late PO Frank Hennnessy, who died suddenly while on patrol in the 70 Precinct a few years ago. Proceeds from this cause will benefit the Police Memorial and Museum. Quite a few members donated pledges to Megan, after she was done speaking. With over a month to go before the big ride, she was on target to set record breaking numbers. Rumors spread that everyone who makes a donation will receive an autographed photo of Miss O'Malley aboard her 10-speed dressed in spandex! She received many well wishes for her noble endeavor, which is around 300 miles. As the meeting drew to a close, President Bergin reminded everyone the next meeting will be in Queens. Our annual HS Scholarship awards will be presented at this meeting. We will next gather at St. Robert Bellarmine RC Church in Bayside on Monday, May 4th. The night ended with Bergin wishing everyone a Happy Easter.

ST. PATRICK'S DAY RAFFLE WINNERS:
Three lucky winners were picked at our St. Patrick's Day Raffle drawing held on March 17th, during our Party on the Pier. Our 1st Prize Winner of a Trip to Ireland or $2000, was Patti Testaverde. 2nd Prize Winner of $500, was Brian Rothermel. 3rd Prize Winner of a Color TV, was Jennifer Donald.

March, 2009 General Meeting

The NYPD Emerald Society held the Monday March 2, 2009 meeting at St. Andrew RC Church in lower Manhattan. For the first time ever, this was a joint meeting with the NYPD Holy Name Society (Manhattan-Bronx-Staten Island). Emerald Society President Tim Bergin and HNS President Phil Tropp joined forces for the night. The program started with Holy Name events discussed first. HNS 1st VP Liam Devine advised on the July 6, 2009 Golf Outing. Next Sue Rapa asked for volunteers to assist with a visit to Ronald MacDonald's House in Manhattan. On March 23, 2009 the HNS will stop by and spend some time with the juvenile cancer patients and their families. They will be giving toys and other gifts to the seriously ill boys and girls who are undergoing treatment and away from their homes. Donations to this effort are greatly appreciated, for more information visit the HNS website, which can be accessed through our Emerald Links section. Among the many members who gathered on this evening, following our first heavy snowfall in NYC was a surprise guest, Ronan Tynan. The famed Irish tenor made an unannounced appearance, accompanied by his good friend PO Patrick Cassidy of the Midtown South Precinct. Tynan while hoping to maintain a low profile obliged his NYPD fan base, signing a few autographs and posing for some photographs. Other than being world famous he fit in quite well with his Irish-American contemporaries. We hope he can join us again, perhaps for a song or two. A second somewhat less known singer Darren Delaney from The Garda Band also dropped by. Darren a Rhode Island State Police lieutenant and his band have played at many of our winter and summer trips to the Catskills. With his voice and humor he has made many friends in the Emerald Society. On this visit his brother Sergeant Dan Delaney of the Chelsea, Mass. Police was his co-pilot as they came down from New England. They were in town visiting young PO Danny Delaney (MTS Pct.) as the rookie cop made his debut appearance at an Emerald meeting. And from points south came Allentown PD Chief Jim Spang, with his pal retired NYPD Det. Kenny Walsh, the duo enjoyed the round trip bus ride from PA. So in spite of some nasty winter weather, our March meeting was as always well attended. President Tim Bergin opened the Emerald side of the proceedings with the usual business reports before calling on Dave Siev from the Fighting Finest Boxing Club. He advised on the team's schedule which includes matches against an Irish team on Friday, March 13 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Brooklyn. Next up was Timmy Horohoe from the Pipe Band, he advised they were gearing up for their 50th Anniversary in 2010. The Band will be organizing a number of events commemorating their distinguished history. Members were invited to add their names to a mailing list which will be used to dispatch plans. With the St. Patrick's Season upon us, President Bergin first spoke on the Staten Island celebration set for Sunday March 8. We will be hosting a post parade gathering at St. Peter's Farrell Hall. Families are invited to attend with their children and our "house band" The Moonshiners will be performing. Bergin then moved on to the big day, March17. We will assemble our uniformed contingent on West 44th Street at 10:30 for the march up 5th Avenue. Retired members will follow behind the NYPD Blue. The post parade party will follow at Pier 92 on the Westside. Bergin once again reminded everyone that card carrying members will pay $10 at the door. Non-members are charged $40, beer, soda and sandwiches are included. The Moonshiners will be center stage and the Pipe Band with their full compliment will be with us all day. It should be another great day for the NYPD Irish and their many friends who come from near and far for our renowned revelry. As the meeting concluded President Bergin reminded everyone to look sharp for the parades and enjoy the entire month of March.

DEATH OF PAST PRESIDENT MICHAEL LYNCH: We sadly inform our membership of the loss of our NYPD Emerald Society Past President Michael Lynch. He served as our Emerald leader in 1970 and 1971. The NYPD Emerald Society held the Monday February 2, 2009 meeting at St. Andrew RC Church in lower Manhattan. Prior to the general meeting President Tim Bergin convened a delegates meeting. Delegates were advised on a number of topics, including the sale of membership cards, upcoming events and their responsibilities as representatives of the Society. Both Bergin and 1st VP Sean Patterson emphasized the importance of our delegates in keeping members informed and involved in our many activities. A second delegates meeting took place after the general meeting for those delegates who were unable to arrive for the earlier session. The positive questions and answers exchanged should benefit all who attended, and more of these meetings are planned for the upcoming year. The regular portion of the meeting was basically all business. Among the most important items discussed was the March 17th itinerary. Bergin announced that due to the high cost of our Party on the Pier, card-carrying members will have to pay $10 at the door. Non-members will pay $40 to take part in the celebration. The best St. Patrick's Day party in NYC remains a bargain. Upcoming events include the Winter Weekend at the Friar Tuck Resort. The Presidents Weekend holiday should be great fun with the Hunter Mountain ski slopes nearby, an all-star lineup of music and kids under 15 years staying for free. Later in the month the Dinner Dance will be at Leonard's of Great Neck. Our 2009 Man-of-the-Year will be NY Congressman Joseph Crowley who serves the Bronx and Queens. Reservations can be made by contacting Chairman Sean Patterson. Taking part in any or all of our wintertime events should help get our members through another season of cold temps. For further info on the Emeralds stay tuned to our website. Our next meeting will be at St. Andrew on the 1st Monday of the month.

IRISH ECHO NEWSPAPER LAUDS NYPD-IRISH HEROES, JANUARY 21-27, 2009 EDITION:
The newspaper headline reads "Irish to the Rescue". The first two sentences inquire "If you're in trouble, if you're in a plane floundering in a river, who ya gonna call? Ghostbusters? Try 1-800-IRISH" The article written by Editor-in-Chief Ray O'Hanlon, tells the story of the heroic exploits of New York's Finest. The reporter details the Police Department's response, to the incredible emergency landing of a jet into the Hudson River. US Airways Flight 1549 an Airbus Model A-320, had to be ditched after its engines were incapacitated shortly after take-off from LaGuardia Airport. Somewhere over the Bronx a flock of Canadian Geese were sucked into both of the aircraft's engines. With no time to spare the pilot made an unprecedented maneuver, landing the jet safely into the near-freezing waters off Manhattan.
O'Hanlon describes the first of the NYPD rescuers as "like the front line of an Emerald Society." Cited from the NYPD Emergency Service Unit were Sergeant Mike McGuinness along with Detectives Sean Mulcahy, James Coll, and John McKenna. The men from ESU Truck-1 raced to a Westside pier and arrived to the stricken airliner by a commandeered ferry. As the jet took on water and the passengers clamored on the aircraft's wings, the foursome began rescue operations.
Via Air-Sea Rescue helicopter came Detective Michael Delaney and his partner Detective Robert Rodriguez. The two scuba-divers plunged into the water from the hovering copter and saved two female passengers, who could not make it safely to the wings. The bravery of these officers made all New Yorkers proud, especially their brethren in the NYPD and the Emerald Society. All these efforts would have not been necessary, if not for the actions of the nearly-doomed jet's fearless pilot. Captain Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger has no doubt become a true aviation legend saving the lives of 155 souls on board Flight 1549, the "Miracle on the Hudson." Read the entire article

THE IRISH ECHO NEWSPAPER HONORS NYPD EMERALD SOCIETY PIPES & DRUMS:
The Irish Echo, as part of the newspaper's 80th Anniversary celebration, has recognized our Emerald Society Band with a Public Service Award. The Echo saluted individual honorees in five of six categories, with the Pipes & Drums as the only group selected. Terry Golway's article reports on the Band's founding in 1960, with some historical information provided by retired Sgt. Brian Meagher, himself a Charter Member of the Band. Former Bandmaster John Tansey remembers fondly the "face of the Band", the late Finbar Devine and his legendary status as Drum Major. More Info

NYPD Emerald Society on WFUV Radio
January 18, 2009

The NYPD Emerald Society was represented on WFUV-90.7 FM Radio by 1st Vice President Sean Patterson. Making his radio debut "appearance", Patterson filled in for President Tim Bergin, during the station's popular Ceol na nGael "Music of the Irish" show. After a northbound trip to the Rosehill Campus of Fordham University up in the Bronx, Patterson was warmly greeted by the show's producers Maggie Dolan and Liz Noonan. Inside the Keating Building where the radio studio is located, Sean was quick to find the NYPD Emerald Society plaque that was presented to WFUV back in November. The plaque recognized the station's support of the Emeralds. The Moonshiners Band was also invited to the Sunday afternoon show, for a live performance. After becoming familiarized with "Studio-A" and miked-up by Jeremy Rainer, Andrea Aparicio and Aaron Peer the group anxiously awaited their on-air time. Ceol na nGael Dee-Jays Ashling Colton and Kevin Quinn made a quick switch from their regular broadcast studio to Studio-A, where The Moonshiners and Patterson joined the program at its midpoint. Colton and Quinn welcomed and introduced everyone over the air. The 6-member band followed with the fast moving Irish ballad "Brennan on the Moor", this live version was outstanding. During some chat time VP Patterson was given the opportunity to speak about upcoming Emerald Society events including our Dinner Dance in February. Patterson handed the microphone to Board Officer Tom Sullivan the chairman of our 44th Annual Winter Weekend. Sullivan invited the listening audience to the Presidents Weekend Trip at the Friar Tuck Resort. After some humorous banter The Moonshiners continued with more music. The Bands third and final live song was "The Boys and Girls in Blue" co-written by Moonshiners Tommy O'Callaghan and Joe O'Brien. The beautiful ballad's lyrics Joe explained were inspired by his father's and his three brother's service in the NYPD. He went on to say how it is dedicated to the heroes lost on September 11th. Tommy O'Callaghan was superb in his sincere rendition of this truly moving song, backed by band mates Bobby Moller, Patsy Lonzello, Tommy Burns and new arrival Frank Bonafato. As the song faded into Amazing Grace, Tom Sullivan a retired Sergeant formerly of Emergency Service Truck-6 recited the song's eloquent dedication that he wrote. Before the broadcast ended Patterson graciously thanked everyone at WFUV and wished the young Dee-Jays well. Our 1st VP certainly did a first rate job representing the NYPD Emeralds.

Annual High School Scholarship Exam
January 17, 2009

The NYPD Emerald Society conducted the Annual High School Scholarship Exam on Saturday, January 17th, at the Police Academy. Forty-two youngsters awoke to early morning alarm clocks, ensuring their arrival for the 9AM test. Chairman Tom Glynn and a host of Emerald Board Officers greeted the boys and girls, along with their parents as they came in from the cold. With temperatures in Manhattan in the single-digits, the warmth of the Academy, with an ample supply of coffee and tea brewing made for much needed hospitality. After checking applications and verifying membership cards, the 8th-grade students were given last minute words of encouragement by their parents. The students were then led upstairs to a large classroom, here the lefthanders were separated from the right-handers, allowing comfortable space for everyone. Once again classroom order was maintained by the good nuns of St. Francis De Sales School of Belle Harbor, Rockaway. Sister Pat Chelius, Sister Paul Martin, and Sister Pat Walsh are all long time proctors of our exam. Their prowess is undeniable as they oversee the examination from start to finish. The three religious educators are the graders of the 3-part test. The three sections consist of a composition, ELA and math. At the end of their two hour plus task most agreed it was a truly challenging exam. The Scholarship Winners will be notified in the near future and will be honored at our May Meeting. Chairman Glynn will contact all parents with the results.

January, 2009 General Meeting

The NYPD Emerald Society held the January 12, 2009 meeting at Bishop Ford High School, in Brooklyn. The decade long tradition of hosting the first meeting of the new year, in Brooklyn continues. A large crowd nearly filled the school's vast cafeteria. New 2009 membership cards were dispensed to the many eager; active, retired and associate members. When the meeting began President Tim Bergin called on NYPD Chaplain Monsignor Robert Romano to lead the throng in an opening prayer, the Pledge of Allegiance followed. Board Officer Rosie Kelly was next to speak at the podium. Rosie who raised funds with a Christmas Campaign explained how proceeds would be donated to an education trust for the children of the late ESU Lieutenant Mike Pigott. With over thirty members of ESU on hand, three of the unit's Lieutenants came forward to accept the Emerald Society's gift to the Pigott Family. The trio of Rich LoBasso, Neil Polis and Jimmy Gibson appeared solemn as their brother in blue was remembered. Gibson, his voice and demeanor reflecting on the great loss the ESU camaraderie has felt with Pigott's tragic death, spoke on their behalf. He thanked the Society and many others for their donations and support. The entire room responded with a reverent applause for Lieutenant Mike Pigott and the loving family he left behind. Another unsung hero was then giving a surprise honor. Rosie Kelly advised of the special work done by PO Charlie Ryan of the 71st Pct. Ryan recently volunteered an assignment to the family of the late PO Russel Timoshenko. While on patrol Timoshenko was shot and killed while stopping a stolen vehicle on July 9, 2007 in Brooklyn. Ryan's duties called for him to assist the Timoshenko family, during the long homicide trials of the three perpetrators apprehended. The assignment was most gratifying for Ryan as he stood by the family of a lost NYPD hero. His dedication to Timoshenko's parents, as they went through a grueling and disconcerting time, was honorable. The last thing Charlie Ryan expected at this Brooklyn meeting was a plaque recognizing his important service. Ryan was quite taken back, by the thoughtful words Rosie Kelly spoke to describe the dedication, sincerity and human kindness he afforded the grief stricken parents. The room once again erupted with a thunderous round of applause, rewarding a true good guy and a good cop as he was handed his plaque. The overwhelmed Ryan managed a choked-up thank you and a great bear hug for the teary-eyed Rosie Kelly. Later on in the evening it was nice to see a broad smile back on young Ryan's Irish face as he enjoyed some time out of the spotlight, with his many friends. As the meeting continued it was back to business. Past President Joe Keenan spoke on the "Dollar Bucket" campaign supporting Police Memorial Week. He also gave an update on a recent federal trial supporting HR 218, the Law Enforcement Safety Act. Chairman Tom Sullivan spoke on the 44th Annual Winter Weekend, February 12-16, at the Friar Tuck Resort. Sullivan urged everyone to book soon as a large turnout is expected for this great Presidents Weekend tradition. Congratulations went out to Past President Mike Murphy (Harbor) promoted to 2nd Grade Detective and Brooklyn South-Staten Island VP Jay Teahan (67 PDS) promoted to Detective 3rd Grade. PO Kerryann Douglass (66 Pct.) was saluted for her good work assisting other MOS delivering a baby. Bandmaster Brian Coughlan reminded members of the Pipe Band's upcoming class starting February 4, 2009, with more info in the website. In a great display of generosity Tim O'Brien (67 Pct.) donated his entire 50/50 Raffle winnings to the Pigott Family Fund. Rosie Kelly looking to add some musical ambience to this gathering enlisted the services of Dee Jay Scott Levine. O'Levine played a great selection of tunes throughout the evening. A good friend and associate member Gerry Patterson who recently lost a valiant battle with cancer was surely missed on this Brooklyn night. Gerry retired from the DSNY and with many family members in the NYPD always attended this January meeting. As the night concluded a large assembly led by Ed, Sean and Eddie Patterson bid farewell to their beloved Gerry, with songs and stories at the nearby McFadden Brother American Legion Post. The post-meeting regrouping was reminiscent of days gone by and Emerald tradition. We return to Manhattan for our February 2nd meeting at St. Andrew.
