Salutations,
As I begin my term as the 28th President of the NYPD Emerald Society, I would like to take this time to introduce myself for those who do not know me. My name is Timothy Bergin, and it is my proud honor and privilege to be your new Emerald Society President. I am the son of Past President Richard Bergin and I have some big shoes to fill.
I would like to thank John Gerrity for two of the greatest years this Society has had. John's exemplary leadership is the reason why the NYPD Emerald Society is considered the greatest and largest fraternal organization in the department and nationally. Thanks Jay!
I would like to thank all of you who supported me in my election, and the new Board of Officers. I look forward to working closely with Sean Patterson the 1st Vice President, and the entire Board to ensure the various events we hold are successful.
My first order of business is membership, as we are the largest fraternal group I would like to see the membership grow. It can only grow with your cooperation and help. I am calling on all delegates and members, to build up our membership by finding new members and signing them up. I encourage the delegates to take a pro-active role, and bring a couple of precinct members to meetings and show them what they are missing, After all their membership dues are for the year, not just one or two meetings.
Our first meeting of 2008 I am happy to say, was in the “greatest and busiest” Borough of Brooklyn, at Bishop Ford High School. For all our members who made it out, I thank you. On Saturday, January 19th bright and early at the Police Academy we held the annual High School Scholarship Test. There were a lot of attentive boys and girls eager the help there parents out financially. Trustee Tom Glynn was our chairman and did a great job. Our 43rd Annual Winter Weekend was held from Thursday February 14th thru Monday February 18th. What a great time, as the parents were all getting there exercise during the day with the children, but were well rewarded in the evening with spectacular music from some really great bands. The Guinness was flowing as was the Irish Whiskey. A well round of applause goes to our Chairmen, Webmaster Tom Sullivan and V.P. Bklyn North Pete Whalen. We hope to see everyone back next year.
The 55th Annual Dinner Dance will be once again held at Leonard's of Great Neck on Friday February 29, 2008 at 1900hrs. The 2008 Irishmen-of- the -Year will be Brian Mooney, City-Wide Trustee of the Patrolman's Benevolent Association. Brian is a great Irish American, longtime member and true friend of the Emerald Society. To purchase tickets to this event contact 1st V.P. Sean Patterson.
As we continue into the very Irish month of March. We will be in Staten Island on Sunday, March 9th. Join us at St. Peter's Church, for the Staten Island St. Patrick's Day Parade & Party, always a good time with great music. On Monday, March 17th St. Patrick's Day, we will once again be marching up Fifth Avenue. For all NYPD Emerald Society Marchers, mustering will be at 10:30 hours on the west side of 44th Street and 5th Avenue. The Post parade celebration will take place at Pier 92, 12th Avenue and 52nd Street from 1300x1700 hrs. Remember you will need your 2008 Membership Card for entry into the pier. There will be no cards sold at the door. There is a $35.00 Admission fee at the door with no card. So get your membership cards.
You can contact any Board Member using the website. I am looking forward to the next two years as your President, and for your continued support. Happy New Year and stay safe.
Fraternally,
Timothy Bergin President, NYPD Emerald Society
