Death Of Emerald Member, LBA President Thomas R. Sullivan
July 29, 2012

President Sean Patterson and the NYPD Emerald Society mourns the passing of our Member Thomas R. Sullivan, on Sunday July 29, 2012. Sullivan was the President of the Lieutenants Benevolent Association, at the time of his of his death. He passed peacefully while a patient at Beth Israel Hospital in Brooklyn at the age of 60. Although diagnosed with cancer a year ago, he continued at the helm of the union's leadership. He kept his illness disclosed but to a few, as he bravely fought against the ravaging disease. It was only recently that he became unable to continue in the demands of the LBA's day to day business. Sullivan's career in law enforcement began many years ago, during the crime ridden days of the 1970's. As a young ambitious patrolman he started in the former NYC Transit Police. It was in Transit District 32, where he learned the many dangers and pitfalls of the city's vast subway system. He also learned the "esprit de corps" that permeated the ranks of the Transit PD and he would hold that close to his heart always. He soon became involved in union business and eventually became a Transit PBA Delegate. From that point on, he would dedicate his all, to his brothers and sisters of the same rank. After a promotion to Sergeant and in a short time, he became a Transit SBA Delegate in TD 30. With his busy days and nights dedicated to family, the job and the union, Sullivan somehow found time to serve as the TPD Honor Legion President. His hard work led his fellow sergeants to encourage him in a bid for higher office on the SBA executive board. In a hard fought election Tom Sullivan became 1st Vice President. His close friend Bob Ganley was elected as President as they unseated an incumbent regime. In the ensuing years, Sullivan was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant and the Transit Force was merged into the NYPD. Tom brought his well earned reputation with him, as a leader and a doer. This led to stints in the Organized Crime Control Bureau and the Counter Terrorism Division. His good work led to a prestigious and key spot in the Chief of Detectives Office. During this time, he made his assent in the LBA executive offices, becoming 1st VP and then stepping into the Presidency. He would later be re-elected with a vast approval of his membership. His non-stop dedication and total commitment to the job he loved are the hallmarks of Tom Sullivan's outstanding career.

Through his NYPD years Sullivan was a frequent visitor to our Manhattan and Brooklyn General Meetings. He was a participant in our St. Patrick's Day events, Winter Weekends and Dinner Dances, always in good humor with his bright Irish smile. All the while, he never forgot his roots in the old Transit Police Force. He enjoyed spending time with the countless old friends he met during reunions and other gathering that brought old comrades back together again. Tom Sullivan will be missed by the many friends he made on the long road of law enforcement that he has travelled, especially by those who have benefitted from his benevolence as a true union man.

Thomas Sullivan leaves behind his loving wife Marie, sons Thomas (NYPD ESS-7, NCPD) and Vincent, step-children Denise, Richard and Jason. He is also survived by his dearly treasured grandchildren.
