Delegate Dinner 2006, December 15, 2006
more photos
The NYPD Emerald Society held the Annual Delegates Dinner on Friday December 15, 2006 at the Hudson Council, Knights of Columbus in Queens. President Jay Gerrity presented CNN reporter Mary Snow with the Media Person of-the-Year Award. The night started with President Gerrity thanking all the delegates in attendance for their help throughout the year. He reminded everyone, that because of the hard work and support from our delegates, we are able to have so many successful events. The delegates "get the word out to the membership" and are the vital link that the Society counts on. This annual end-of- the-year affair is the President's opportunity to officially acknowledge the delegates good work.

President Gerrity then went on to present Mary Snow with her Emerald Society plaque, recognizing her support of the NYPD. He began, first by telling the members about her background. Mary Snow grew up here in New York, was an Irish step-dancer in her youth, and a graduate of Fordham University. While in college she was a disc jockey at the school's well known radio station WFUV. She started her television news career at WPIX Channel 11, after graduating from Fordham. At the present time she can be seen on CNN's The Situation Room, reporting on a variety of topics. After receiving her plaque and thanking Gerrity for the honor, Mary Snow spoke briefly, recalling fondly, memories of her grandfather who served as a member of the NYPD. She then went on to say, that she is quite proud of her cousin Richie Wall as he continues the family tradition as an NYPD sergeant. Richie is also an Emerald Board Officer, and it is apparent that he and Mary come from "good stock". Snow spent the rest of the evening sharing conversations with her many new friends, and enjoying the music of our Pipes & Drums. The Band once again put on a terrific show. It was a debut performance for two new members, Sgt. Rob Gault (10 Pct.) and PO Michael Brennan (Harbor). Both men did a great job, and should have long careers with the Band. Brennan is following in his Dad's footsteps, Mike Brennan Sr. is a long time member of the pipe section. Timmy Adrat says "the Band is always looking for new blood to join their ranks". It was another exceptional night, and the Knights of Columbus once again made everyone feel at home. Nice work by Chairman Don Rogers.

The NYPD Emerald Society held the December 4, 2006 meeting at St. Andrew RC Church in Manhattan. President Jay Gerrity announced Bob Ganley as the Emerald Society's 2007 Man-of-the-Year. Ganley is currently the Vice President of the Sergeants Benevolent Association (SBA), and a member of our Pipe & Drum Band. He will formally be honored at the Annual Dinner Dance, on Friday February 23, 2007. Gerrity called Ganley to the podium and handed him the microphone. With a broad smile he thanked Jay, and told the membership that he was both honored and surprised when Jay selected him. He went on to say he was proud to represent the Society. 1st Vice President Timmy Bergin along with Past President Tom Cawley will be chairing the Dinner Dance, and they should be contacted for ticket reservations.

In other business, Tom Sullivan chairman of the Winter Weekend announced the dates for the annual trip. The 2007 holiday will be Presidents Weekend, Thursday February 15th thru Monday February 19th at the Nevele Grande Resort. Among the highlights are: Children under 18 years are FREE, 5 Irish-American Bands, the Pipe & Drum Band, Young Irish Step Dancers' Show and Young Irish Musicians' Show. There have been a few minor delays, but brochures will be available by next month. Over the last few years the trip has really grown, averaging close to 1200 guest at this fun filled excursion. More info will be appearing in our Website. This meeting just before Christmas keeps our Board Officers busy. Rosie Kelly continued collecting donations for our Annual Christmas Toy Drive for needy children. Sean Patterson and Pete Whalen were kept busy selling Emerald Society goods, as members purchased Christmas gifts.

President Gerrity concluded the meeting wishing everyone and their families a Merry Christmas, and a safe and a Happy New Year. He reminded everyone that the January Meeting will be at Bishop Ford High School in Brooklyn. This meeting will be on Monday January 8, 2007, the second Monday of the month because of the holiday.

O'Connor Street Re-Naming, November 18, 2006

On a beautiful autumn morning, the Town of Hempstead conducted a street dedication in tribute to Patrolman Patrick O'Connor. On Saturday November 18, 2006 a section of Ridge Lane was re-named and will now be known as "Patrick O'Connor Lane". O'Connor lived on Ridge Lane with his wife Ann, and their 4 children Maureen, Ann Marie, Paddy and Jimmy. Ptl. O'Connor was assigned to the NYPD Emergency Service Squad Truck-1. He was killed in the line-of-duty on November 24, 1971, while he was assisting a motorist on the Gowanus Expressway in Brooklyn. It was a rainy night on Thanksgiving Eve, a truck that skid out of control struck O'Connor's police vehicle. The fierce impact of the crash killed him instantly, his partner that night Ptl. Fitzgerald was badly injured but survived. In his 10 years on the job Patrick O'Connor made many friends, and wore many hats. The large crowd that gathered this day was made up of family, friends and former colleagues. There were current members of 1-Truck as well as members of REMA, the Retired Emergency Man Association. His beloved Emerald Society Pipes & Drums were well represented. The Pipe Band started the ceremony, as they marched down the lane, with a precise cadence and a stirring sound. Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray did a fine job conducting the program. The NYPD Ceremonial Unit's Color Guard marched in the flags with Truck-1 and 2 REPs following. After PO Jason Martinoff led a moving rendition of the National Anthem, he was followed by Msgr. John Gilmartin of St. Anne RC Church saying the invocation. As the ladies of the O'Connor family and their children gathered by the podium, sons Paddy and Jimmy stood fast within the ranks of the Pipes & Drums. Among those who spoke were Supervisor Murray and Councilman Gary Hudes. Retired Ptl. Richie Powers who was O'Connor's partner at 1-Truck drew a hardy laugh from the crowd. Powers who appeared somewhat uncomfortable in his role as a public speaker remarked "I'd rather be climbing a bridge". A task he performed many times in his years in Emergency Service. O'Connor's daughter Maureen Paradine representing her family also spoke. She expressed her families thanks to everyone who made the dedication possible. She remembered fondly, as she looked at the Pipe Band, how after her father's death, months later in the spring time, the Band escorted her down Ridge Lane on the day of her First Holy Communion. It is a childhood that she will always cherish. She also thanked everyone from the Emerald Society and from ESU as they have supported the family these many years. The tone of the day was mainly upbeat and celebratory. It was a day to celebrate the memory of a true NYPD hero. When the new street sign was uncovered it was indeed a happy and proud moment for Ann O'Connor and her family. The rousing sound of the Pipes & Drums added to this special moment. With the shining ESU trucks along with some old-time black, green and white vintage radio cars there certainly was a link to the NYPD's past and present.

Among those on hand were Emerald Society President Jay Gerrity, PBA President Patrick Lynch, PBA Trustee Brian Mooney, Chief Michael O'Neill, REMA Coordinator Tony San Pietro and the 2006 Patrick O'Connor Medal of Valor recipient PO Chris Scarry. As the ceremony concluded everyone was invited back to Ann O'Connor's house just down the block. At the open-house everyone shared in the O'Connor Irish hospitality. There was plenty of stories shared, and much laughter in the house, and under a tent in the backyard. It was a day when the hero NYPD, ESU Patrolman, Emerald Trustee, Pipe Band Member, father and husband, all that Patrick O'Connor was, this man who wore many hats, would have been very proud of.

November, 2006 General Meeting

The NYPD Emerald Society held the November 6, 2006 meeting at St. Andrew RC Church in lower Manhattan. President Jay Gerrity and Ann O'Connor presented P.O. Christopher Scarry with the Patrick O'Connor Medal for Valor. Scarry was awarded the Combat Cross at a recent NYPD Medal Day ceremony for his heroic performance under fire (see the detailed report below). He received a great ovation, as President Gerrity read the accounts of the bravery Scarry displayed along with other members of the service, during a fierce gun battle in Brooklyn. This evening was a true family affair as members of both the O'Connor and Scarry families were present. Ann O'Connor, Patrick's widow was accompanied by her two sons Paddy and Jimmy along with her daughter Ann Marie Golden. Her daughter-in-law and four grandchildren were also on hand. Marleen Scarry who is a P.O. assigned to the 90 Pct. joined her husband, and his father retired Det. John Scarry for the presentation. They all beamed with pride as Christopher received both an inscribed Emerald Society plaque, and the prestigious gold O'Connor Medal. Both clans formed a quick bond as they posed for pictures, and shared the night together. With Ann O'Connor and her family participating in this annual awards night, it has become a truly special event on the Emerald Society calendar. Grandpa must have been looking out, as young Billy Golden was the winner of the 50/50 Raffle, we hope he took his grandma and his brothers out for a treat!

As the meeting continued, Pres. Gerrity called on committee chairmen for updates on various events. George Anderson said the Army Game at West Point was a great success, and he thanked Timmy Black for his assistance. Rosie Kelly announced the start of our Christmas Toy Drive and requested donations. Joe Keenan spoke on the National Conference Law Enforcement Emerald Societies (NCLEES) news. This included matters involving HR 218, the Gun Carry Law. Keenan has been busy for quite some time now dealing with training issues and NYPD policies for both active and retired members. He has also reached out to officials at other state and federal agencies and organizations, as he pursues answers to this complicated piece of legislation. With Joe's "steadfast Irish determination", hopefully we should be hearing more definitive news in the near future. On a lighter note he announced that in a recent NCLEES Scholarship Lottery, two of the six winners were NYPD members. The "Dollar Bucket" campaign has started, and will run through early spring. A total of $3,500. was raised last year through our NYPD contributions for the Law Enforcement Memorial.

It was another meeting where we had a representative of the Gardai present. Gavin McDonnell from Dublin, along with his pal Ray Kinsella made the trip across the broad Atlantic. Our Manhattan South V. P. Timmy Black was giving the two lads a tour of the Big Apple. Retired member Kenny Walsh traveled in from his home in the Pennsylvania countryside.

It's always nice to be in NYC the first Monday of the month. Our out of town friends are always welcomed to share our Emerald Hospitality at a meeting.

The following narrative account originally appeared in the NYPD 2006 Medal Day Program. The four Police Officers were awarded the Combat Cross for their actions. PO Scarry, in addition was awarded the NYPD Emerald Society Patrick O'Connor Medal for Valor, in November 2006.

On the evening of June 14, 2003, Police Officers Christopher Scarry, Freddy Vega, and then-Police Officer Raymond Gutierrez of the 90 Pct., along with P.O. John Boyle of the 75 Pct., were participating in a massive search for an armed fugitive. The perpetrator had just engaged in a violent 20 minute robbery spree that produced six victims; five of which were robbed at gunpoint and one who sustained a gunshot wound. Complainants had observed the gunman flee into a multiple dwelling, and in a team effort to apprehend him, POs Gutierrez, Scarry, Vega and Boyle initiated a vertical search of the building. The perp had seemingly escaped, but then additional information came in over the radio that he was hiding on top of the roof access bulkhead. The stairway roof top proved to be inaccessible, so in order to investigate, PO Vega lifted PO Scarry into a position where he could see the obstructed area. There he observed the perp lying on his back, hiding from view. Taking up tactical positions, the officers shouted for the suspect to show himself. Discovered, the perp got to his feet, but refused to comply with the officer's instructions to surrender. Finally, he leaned over as if to climb down, but then he rose back up again with a firearm clenched in his fist. In the next instant, he began shooting at the officers. The officers returned fire and sought cover. Then, the gunman jumped off the bulkhead. Targeting the police officers yet again, he resumed shooting. The officers, forced to defend themselves at great peril, returned fire once more wounding the perp and taking him into custody.

October, 2006 General Meeting

The NYPD Emerald Society held the October 2, 2006 meeting at St. Barnabas High School in the Bronx. President Jay Gerrity started the meeting by thanking Msgr. Edward Barry for hosting the annual Bronx Meeting. Our "go-to-guy" in the Bronx, Board Officer Brendan Nolan once again did a great job arranging the night. Brendan calls this event the "Bronx Shamroctober Meeting." Each year thanks to his efforts the attendance continues to grow. Brendan was assisted by his wife Mayra, making the evening a success. There was a lot on the agenda for President Gerrity, as this was also Pipe Band Appreciation Night. Six veteran members of the Band were presented with plaques, recognizing their loyal and unwavering support of the Society. After marching into the school, and playing a selection of well-known Irish and American favorites, the Band stood by. The six honorees were then called individually to the podium for the presentation. Receiving the plaques were Chris Green, Richie Newman, Jimmy Hines, Jimmy O’Sullivan, Kevin McDonough and Bandmaster Brian Coughlan. All six, apparently men of few words, shook hands with Gerrity and simply stated “thank you”. After a few more songs the Band marched out to a standing ovation.

Among those in attendance was a large group from the Tipperary Football Team, along with some of their traveling fans. The lads and their entourage arrived a couple of days earlier from Ireland, and were spending a busy holiday in NYC. On Saturday October 7th, the team will be playing the NYPD Gaelic Football Club in a match, at Gaelic Park in the Bronx. Proceeds from the game and a post game party will be donated to Police Officer Jake Brower. The donations will help out with his extraordinary medical bills due to a family illness. Representing the Tipperary Team, Brian Murphy presented President Gerrity with a plaque, engraved with the An Garda Siochana seal, as he thanked Jay and the Society for their hospitality. Gillian Hickey also from the team handed out souvenir pens to the membership. Team Tipperary looked liked they enjoyed the meeting, and it was great having them with us.

Tommy Glynn announced the date for the High School Scholarship. The test will be held 9 AM Saturday January 20, 2007 at the Police Academy. Eligible children must be 8th grade students who will be entering high school in September 2007. Tommy Cawley announced the Bennett College Scholarship filing has been extended to January. Eligible students must currently be enrolled as college freshman. For more information concerning our Scholarship Programs contact Glynn or Cawley through our Web Site.

Later after the meeting concluded some remained in the neighborhood. They were tempted to explore the local ambience of Katonah Avenue in Woodlawn, or McLean Avenue up the block in Yonkers. Both streets are well known for their vibrant Irish night life.

September, 2006 General Meeting

The NYPD Emerald Society held a general membership meeting on Monday September 11, 2006 at the St. Andrew R. C. Church in downtown Manhattan. The date marked the 5th anniversary of the terrorist attack on America. President Jay Gerrity opened the meeting asking the membership to remember all those who lost their lives that awful day, especially the heroic 23 members of the NYPD who perished. It was certainly hard to believe, for many of us, that five years have passed.

As the meeting continued President Gerrity spoke on the recent trip he lead to Ireland in August. The Emerald tour group had a wonderful time, as they explored the Irish countryside crisscrossing the island’s southern tier. One memorable highlight was a fun filled sit-down at a Medieval Banquet at Bunratty Castle. Gerrity promises to have many photos of this holiday, thanks to his wife Mary Ann.

Long time Associate Member Tommy Nihill was the recipient of an Emerald Society plaque, honoring him for his outstanding service to the Society. Tommy stood tall, as President Gerrity spoke accolades regarding his years of dedication and support. Nihill is known, by his many friends, for his years at the Irish Tourist Board in Manhattan. He looked proud as he posed for the camera, plaque in hand, and with an entourage of admirers.

Members were updated on nearing events. Chairman George Anderson reminded everyone that the Army Football Game at West Point was set for next month. Timmy Black announced the NYPD Gaelic Football Club’s match versus a team from Tipperary on Saturday October 7th. The game is part of a benefit for the family of P. O. Brower, as he is dealing with extraordinary medical expenses. After the game there will be a 10-13 Party at the Gaelic Park Field. The Tommy O’Callaghan & the Moonshiners Band will be making the trip to the Bronx, and will provide their great music. A large turnout would be truly appreciated for this event. Brendan Nolan has been busy arranging next months meeting in the Bronx. We will once again returning to St. Barnabas High School in Woodlawn. Brendan refers to this night as the Bronx Shamroctober Meeting. He promises it to be a fun time as it will be also be Pipe Band Appreciation Night.

After the summer hiatus everyone enjoyed the first meeting back. The days will be growing shorter as we move into autumn. If you can, please come out to a meeting and enjoy the fraternity.

Summer Getaway, 2006
more photos
The NYPD Emerald Society held their 2nd Annual Summer Getaway, July 13th-17th, 2006 at the Nevele Grande Resort, Ellenville, NY. The weather was beautiful, the Catskill Mountains were breathtaking, and the music was fantastic throughout the fun-filled holiday. As President Jay Gerrity remarked "once again the Chairmen Tom Sullivan and Timmy Bergin have put together a 5-day weekend". "Keeping everyone busy day and night for 3 days just isn't enough for the Emeralds!" The early arrivals checked in Thursday at noon. The Bangers and Mash Band made their Emerald debut that night, and were well received by the crowd. The Long Island foursome of Deirdre on fiddle, Scott lead singer, Seth bass guitar, and John on the drums fit right in. They helped set the tone for the weekend. On Friday they played poolside at the Guinness Welcoming Party. At this party the rest of our arriving guest enjoyed music under the bright sunshine, in between dips in the pool. Our old favorites from Staten Island, Tommy O'Callaghan and the Moonshiners Band then followed up with more fine music, as the Guinness continued to flow till late in the day. After a dinner respite both bands later returned to play in our Emerald Hospitality room. It was here that our veteran guest showed the novices how to properly pace yourself during this long trip. Included in our group was over 100 children, and there were many activities for them to participate. The kids were happy during the day with pool games, lawn games, horseback riding and hiking. There were even some very competitive softball games. At night the kids had a blast in the Arcade room, boy do those quarters go fast! Anthony from the Nevele's Activities had plenty of fun events running all through the weekend. He seemed to enjoy the bingo games and the potato sack races as much as the guest. Our old friend and favorite clown the famous Macaroni stopped by at breakfast Saturday morning. After his "balloon show" in the dining room the laughs continued at his stage show. It was the perfect time to have a camera with Macaroni's hi-jinks. Macaroni sure can fill a room with giggles and the kids love him.

Barbeque lunches were held each day, in an area between the pool and a slow moving stream. The view of the adjoining golf course, and the surrounding green covered mountains was picture perfect. After lunch many guest enjoyed sitting at this outdoor dining spot, and relaxing as they took in the beauty of Mother Nature. With all this sunshine there certainly was plenty of sunscreen applied, and then later reapplied while at poolside. Somehow the pool water remained crystal-clear as everyone looked for some cooling comfort at this oasis. Trustee Pete Whalen and Past President Richie Bergin kept cool all weekend by selling Emerald Society hats and tee-shirts, nice work! Saturday afternoon the Garda Band arrived from Rhode Island, they came on stage after The Moonshiners. The Nevele's Cocktail Party also took place outside, and to the delight of all, amongst the finger-foods was an endless supply of shrimp. The food, drink, music and swimming continued till late in the afternoon.

After dinner and some exciting raffles everyone gathered outside the main lobby. It was time to line up for our Patriotic Parade, the kids wore red, white and blue hats and shirts with many carrying flashlights. All the parents seemed as happy to be part of the contingent. An Ellenville Police car with its lights flashing led the way. NYPD Bagpipers John Tansey and his son John piped the marchers onward to the golf course. At the golf course lawn chairs were quickly set up while others spread out blankets, and anxiously awaited the Fireworks Show. The Garda-Moonshiners All-star Band played a medley of sing-along favorites, as the 2 bands joined together to make this special event that much better. With the music playing the show started with some large explosions overhead. The fireworks were absolutely incredible, the sky went from blackness to being lit up with fantastic colors of green, red, white and blue. The sparkling lights showered down on to the ground. Each time it seemed that the show would end more and more rockets would burst into the night. At one point on the golf course a flaming blue NYPD sign lit up, and then a flaming green Shamrock also appeared. As the 2 icons burned there were plenty of oohs and aahs from the mesmerized crowd. The show lasted for more then 20 minutes, and everyone felt they had their own front-row set for this wonderful exhibition. The explosions of the rockets reverberated through the valley, and you could actually feel the force. Our spectators looked amazed with their eyes wide open as they cheered throughout the entire spectacle. After the final sprays of color, many people said they had tears in their eyes, especially during the NYPD and Shamrock displays. When the last rockets went off Darren Delaney sang a moving version of the classic "Danny Boy" and it was timed perfect. Vincent Esposito and Michael Ilisssyn of the "July 4 Ever", did an outstanding job with their crew producing this unforgettable fireworks extravaganza. We all tip our hats to the work they do. This was indeed the highlight of the entire summer for most in attendance. Before heading back to the hotel, the Nevele hosted an outdoor Ice Cream Party. The frozen treats and ice-cold sodas went fast as the group enjoyed a mosquito-free summer night. Back inside the hotel in the Hospitality Room Tommy O'Callaghan and the Moonshiners led off with some great tunes. Joe O'Brien on keyboard, Patsy Lonzello on bass, Bobby Moller on drums, Jimmy Brady on guitar, and Tommy Byrne multi-tasking showed how hard work and practice can produce beautiful music. Tommy and the boys really put on a night of terrific entertainment. The Garda Band followed as Rhode Island's Finest Darren Delaney and Tommy Underhill continued a night of premium performances. The two always have stirring rebel songs, as fiddler Eric Neff and guitarist Bobby Joyce round out the group with their talents. Later on the 2 bands merged their energy and again became the All-star Band.

Sunday morning no one took roll call, but we were light at breakfast. The All-stars as always kept the crowd out a little too late. By 11AM Father Robert Romano, our NYPD Chaplain, was ready to offer Mass as the large group was seated. Joe O'Brien and Tommy Underhill provided music. President Jay Gerrity and Brian Reilly (Holy Name Society 1st VP) each did a reading. Megan Aileen Sullivan was the altar server. Together they all assisted Fr. Romano in making the Mass a true highlight for the weekend. Fr. Romano once again showed his loyalty to the NYPD and our Society by making the trip up to visit us. It was also nice for many of us to meet the good father's mother, the lovely Mrs. Romano. They both stayed for a while and had lunch, while making some new friends.

Though some of our guest had to depart in the afternoon, most stayed until Monday. The Garda Band played following lunch, and everyone admired their ability not to wilt in the July heat! The pool was the place to be and the sun was intense. For many being lazy by poolside was a cool way to spend the day. Closing night and the Garda Band kept playing great music. There was even some help from the audience, as some guest singers appeared on stage. We always have some hidden talent from within our group. By midnight there was a Garda Band "tribute band", they even posed for some pictures.

Monday after the final Barbeque and it was time to drop the curtain on another Summer Getaway. As the last guest departed for home, it appeared that we achieved our goal. Our members with their families and friends had a good time with lots of fun. We tried to recreate once again, those fond times that many enjoyed at the old Police Camp. There are plenty of smiling faces in the Photo Section of the Web Site, please take a look.

June, 2006 General Meeting
more photos
The NYPD Emerald Society held the June 5, 2006 meeting at the St. Andrew R. C. Church in lower Manhattan. President Jay Gerrity conducted one of the quickest meetings in recent memory. A number of committee reports were presented in rapid succession. Brendan Nolan spoke on the recent Fishing Trip from City Island, the event was a success, with a good time had by all. President Gerrity unfortunately had some very sad news, the recent death of Pipe Sgt. Jimmy Henry of the Pipe Band. Jimmy was a well known member of the Band, and his passing has certainly left everyone who knew with a tremendous loss. Gerrity asked the members to remember Jimmy and his family in their prays. The Band has set up a special fund to assist with the educational cost for the Henry children. More information on this can be found in the Bands web site.

Among the upcoming events, two were sold-out, including the June 3-Day Golf Outing, and the Yankee Game in late July. The Summer Getaway still had plenty of rooms available, but reservations were going fast for the July13-17 holiday. Trip Brochures and Reservation forms can be downloaded through our Web Site. The Summer Getaway is truly a bargain, with children under 17 years of age free. There is also a great rate for the "early arrivals" on Thursday. The trip is the "Emerald version" of the "old Police Camp", that was part of our great NYPD history. Hopefully many families will take part in this fun filled event.

At the close of the meeting, Gerrity reminded everyone that there were no meetings held in July and August. He wished everyone a safe and happy summer. Our next meeting will be Monday, September 11th at St. Andrew.

Annual Fishing Trip, May 22, 2006
more photos
Members of the NYPD Emerald Society set sail on a fishing trip Monday May 22, 2006. The day started with a breakfast of coffee, tea and sandwiches shared by nearly 3 dozen fishermen. In a short time many were making themselves better prepared by sipping on an old favorite "Irish Coffee". The spirited group then sailed out of the safe harbor of City Island, and into some choppy waters. There were plenty of blue skies above as the good ship "The Island Current II" made its way out into the Long Island Sound. Emerald President Jay Gerrity and 1st VP Timmy Bergin reported that Chairman Brendan Nolan did a fine job organizing this party at sea. Among the notable anglers on board were a couple of contest winners. Jay Teahan proudly representing Brooklyn South won the pool for the "largest catch", as he grappled with an 8 pound Black Fish. We hope he remembered to take it out of his trunk after getting back home! The lucky winner of the 50/50 drawing was PJ Doherty. Acting Emerald photographer Timmy Black snapped some pictures with his camera, and they will be showing in the Web Site photo section. Unfortunately Timmy wasn't able to get any pictures of "the giant fish that kept getting away" all day from Co-chairman Mike McNamee. The 8 hour trip was enjoyed by all, and everyone arrived back to the dock safely, thanks to the nautical skills of the ship's Captain Chris Cullen. Rumor has it that many "fish tales" were repeated afterwards at a nearby City Island watering hole, as plans were made for next years cruise.

May, 2006 General Meeting

The NYPD Emerald Society held the May 1, 2006 meeting at the St. Sebastian R. C. Church hall in Woodside, Queens. On this night High School Scholarship Winners were recognized for their academic achievements in the highly competitive exam they sat down for in January. These eight-grade students were the "cream of the crop" from over fifty youngsters who competed. The night began with a delicious hot buffet dinner that was enjoyed by all. Many members then made purchases of Emerald Society clothing, and there were brisk sales, especially youth sizes. The business portion of the meeting was suspended, and the program started with President Jay Gerrity thanking the honorees, and their parents for attending this special night. Chairman Richard Wall and Co-Chairman Tom Glynn were also thanked by President Gerrity for their diligent work making this event a success. One by one the students were called up to the stage and presented with a framed certificate naming them a high school scholarship winner. They were accompanied to the stage by their proud parents. Everyone was quite happy to pose for pictures on this happy occasion. There were also many proud grandparents in attendance, and it seemed that everyone had a camera with them. The parents of the seven boys and seven girls will receive varying amounts of scholarship money, towards their child's Catholic High School education. Afterwards the NYPD Emerald Society Pipes & Drums provided musical entertainment, and they were warmly welcomed by the membership and all the families. The Band must have left their best players back in the city after they sent a large contingent "down under" for an Australian holiday. Their performance was as always outstanding. The business portion of the meeting followed with the main topic of upcoming events. Members can find info on the Spring and Summer Events in the Web Site, including the 1st Annual Fishing Trip from City Island in May, June's 3 Day Golf Outing, and July's 2nd Annual Summer Getaway and the Yankee Game & Barbeque and the Ireland Trip. The June 5th Meeting will be at St. Andrew's in Manhattan.

April, 2006 General Meeting

On Monday April 3, 2006 the NYPD Emerald Society held a monthly meeting at St. Andrew R. C. Church, in lower Manhattan. This meeting was noticeably quieter than the March meeting that lead into St. Patrick's Day. Those in attendance seemed to enjoy the less hectic ambience that this Spring meeting is known for. Our die hard members appreciate the short lines for food and beverages. Our clothing sales people also got a much needed break, after their records sales at the Pier on March 17th. President Jay Gerrity was so happy with their work, he gave the Clothing Chairman Sean Patterson this night off! After "Prays and the Pledge" President Gerrity started the proceeding by presenting plaques to two recently retired Board Officers. Gary Rudolph and Mike Brassington were recognized for their years of service to the Society. Gerrity then went on to thank everyone, who marched with our large contingent, in the St. Patrick's Day Parade for their support. The great turnout of uniformed and retired members was much appreciated, and once again enhanced our image among the parade spectators. Gerrity went on to thank the Board Officers, and the many members who helped out at the Pier. Their hard work made for a great celebration, which was enjoyed by the thousands who attended. Gerrity also acknowledged our Pipes & Drums, they proudly led the way up 5th Avenue. On the Pier the Band as always put on an outstanding performance.

President Gerrity then went on to the topic of upcoming events. There are many planned activities right through Autumn, and there is something that should appeal to all of our many members, whether they are young or old. In May Brendan Nolan is chairing our 1st Fishing Trip sailing from City Island, this should be quite an adventure. Information on the other events including the Golf Outing, Yankee Game, Summer Getaway, Ireland Trip and Army Football Game can be found in the Emerald web site.

With all the business matters closed the members continued to enjoy the subdued gathering. There was no need to shout or squeeze through the room. There was plenty of food, so many enjoyed seconds at the buffet. Members were reminded that the next meeting in May would take place at St. Sebastian R. C. Church Woodside, Queens. At this meeting the High School Scholarship winners will be honored.

St. Patrick's Day, March 17, 2006

Friday March 17, 2006 was another grand day for the NYPD Emerald Society. Led once again by the NYPD Pipes & Drums up 5th Avenue, the marching contingent made for a magnificent sight. It was a beautiful St. Patrick’s Day in NYC, and a great day for a parade. With so many marchers the Emeralds were spread out well over three long city blocks. The Pipes & Drums sounded tremendous, as New York’s Finest received countless ovations from the thousands of spectators along the parade route. With a cold nip in the air, and plenty of bright sunshine, it made for perfect marching conditions. President Jay Gerrity and 1st Vice President Timmy Bergin were all smiles, as they marched behind the wide Green & Gold Banner of the Emerald Society. The two were followed by the rest of the Board Officers, a second Color Guard, ranking members of the department and hundreds of our uniformed members. In fact our NYPD contingent is so large that we need a second band. The NYS FOP Pipes & Drums led the way for a large group of our retirees. The retirees seemed as enthusiastic as the young men and women still on the job! As always, “the cops” are among the most recognizable of all the many groups heading up the avenue. The long blue column year after year receives the loving acknowledgement of the jubilant spectators. There’s no better time to be a cop in New York, then on this day when the entire city celebrates the Irish!

By early afternoon most of our marching membership was at Pier 88. The post-parade Party on the Pier attracts thousands. The Michael Sheahan Band entertained the cops, and all their friends throughout the day. Michael and the boys put on a terrific show. The talented former NYPD Detective Sheahan, and his band have become a St Patrick’s Day tradition at the pier. Among the many revelers were the leaders of all the police unions. The PBA, DEA, SBA, LBA & CEA were all on board and having a fun time. Many retirees also enjoyed sharing the good time while telling a war story or two. “Top Cops” and NYPD alumni Bill Bratton, and John Timoney were seen renewing old acquaintances. Cops from dozens of cities were welcomed and warmly received, by their NYPD contemporaries. It was real nice seeing a group of cops from New Orleans, they received well wishes from just about everyone on the Pier. We hope they enjoyed their entire stay in the Big Apple. There was also a group from the Garda, every year they send over a contingent. Making that trip across the pond sure provides a fun filled holiday for our brothers, and sisters of the Irish Police force.

Late in the afternoon the Pipes & Drums marched to the center of the Pier. They absolutely captivated the crowd as they played. With over 100-kilted members this day, the Band never looked more impressive. Their reverberating tunes filled the vast room with emotion. Their signature song “Amazing Grace” invoked an overwhelming sense of pride, along with some tearful eyes. Later as they marched out, they were saluted with a loving applause. The Pipes & Drums are indeed the musical heart, and soul of the NYPD. They represent the good times, on happy occasions like St. Patrick’s Day, as well as those solemn times, when they inspire us to stand proud and fight the good fight.

As many of our Emerald Society Presidents have said “St. Patrick’s Day is a working day for the Emerald Board”. President Gerrity, 1st VP Bergin and Treasurer Mike Murphy led the way all day with their labor of love. The entire Board did a fine job, keeping everything running smoothly throughout the long afternoon. From ticket and raffle sales, to clothing sales, there was many a demanding task that the Board, and the many volunteers dedicated themselves to. Hard work is the key to making St. Patrick’s Day the premier event on the NYPD Emerald Society’s calendar. After all it certainly isn’t easy, pouring enough cold beer at one party to fill Water Tunnel #3!

Staten Island St. Patrick's Party, March 5, 2006

The NYPD Emerald Society held the Annual Staten Island St. Patrick’s Day Party on Sunday, March 5th. The celebration was at the St. Peter R.C. Church, with many families in attendance. The familiar sounds of the Tommy O’Callaghan & The Moonshiners Band entertained the hometown crowd. Another local favorite the Staten Island Pipers stopped in, and played some beautiful tunes. Congressman Vito Fossella also made a visit, and wished everyone well on this fine day, when the “Island” becomes “Staten Ireland”. Pastor Msgr. James Dorney as always, was a great host to the NYPD Emeralds. Year after year the good father has graciously opened the doors of St. Peter’s to our Society. He is a dear friend to us all, and he always has time to help a cop.

A group of young, and pretty Irish Step-Dancers provided a display of their talents. The dancers performed the traditional dances in both soft-shoes, and later in their hard-shoes. They had the crowd clapping their hands, and thoroughly enjoying the reels and hornpipes.

President Jay Gerrity and his wife Maryann appeared to enjoy the day, it’s a lot less hectic than the Party on the Pier. Jay will be quite busy on the 17th of March, so a nice Staten Island Party made for a pleasant time. Great job by the Board Officers, and the many volunteers in helping set up, and later cleaning up after the party.

March, 2006 General Meeting

On Monday, March 6, 2006 the NYPD Emerald Society held their General Meeting at St. Andrew R.C. Church, in lower Manhattan. President Jay Gerrity honored Past President Michael Murphy for his leadership these past two years. Murphy was presented with a beautiful engraved glass piece, recognizing his dedication and service to the Society. Bob Hugel representing the Committee of Police Societies (COPS) made a second presentation. On behalf of this coalition of NYPD fraternal groups, Murphy was given a large plaque. The plaque had the membership cards for each of the COPS participating fraternities. As Emerald President, Murphy interacted with the COPS organization, keeping a close working relationship with them, as well as the department. Murphy certainly earned these tributes, he worked diligently to maintain the integrity of the Emeralds, during his two-year term. Anytime a problem arose he always reacted fast, and had no difficulty getting the job done himself. President Gerrity repeated once again, that he is happy that Mike will remain on the Board, serving as treasurer.

President Gerrity also updated the 2006 Trip to Ireland, it will be August 4th thru 15th. With 3 nights each in Dublin, Kilarney and Galway. The price is $2,400. per person based on double occupancy, a $200. Deposit is due by March 31st. Checks should be made out to: Tara Travel. For more details e.mail NYPDEmeralds@netzero.net or visit our web site.

No March meeting would be the same, without going over the plans for March 17th. Gerrity reminded the membership of the following parade related rules: No green hats, tams, mustaches, ties, sox or other accessories. Our marchers will wear the Uniform of the Day: Winter coat, white gloves and 8-Point cap. Retirees are welcomed, and encouraged to march behind our Uniformed Contingent. Over the past several years, there has been a substantial amount of our retirees, proudly following the long column of blue up 5th Avenue. Regarding our Party, we will once again be using PIER 88 at the Passenger Ship Terminal on the Westside. The following rules apply: No children are permitted, No NYPD members are allowed in uniform (please have non-uniform clothing available for the party), No membership cards will be sold the day of the parade, the party will be from 1PM till 5PM with No entry after 3PM. There is absolutely No smoking allowed on the pier. Gerrity reminded everyone, that although it may seem like a lot of rules, we are known for having the best St. Patrick’s Day Party in New York!

Ed Hartnett representing the NYPD Gaelic Football Club solicited the crowd, looking for potential players for the team. He spoke of their recent trip to Ireland this past year, and their plans for the next season. The club is willing to train new comers, and will welcome anyone who has a desire to learn the game. The club’s web site can be reached through our links.

As another March meeting closed, the members are sure to be kept busy, with numerous parades and events ahead.

NYPD Emerald Society’s Annual Winter Weekend
February 16-21, 2006

The NYPD Emerald Society’s 41st Annual Winter Weekend was held February 16th – 21st at the Fallsview Hotel, at the Nevele Grande Resort. 1100 guests enjoyed the President’s Day Weekend holiday in the Catskill Mountains. After having two feet of snow, in the NYC area the weekend before, our guests were surprised by the spring-like conditions in the countryside. Fortunately by Saturday the temperature dipped, and man-made snow covered the slopes. The skiers, ice-skaters, and snow-boarders young and old delighted in the “Emerald Olympic” atmosphere.

The "early birds" who arrived on Thursday got a head start. After dinner our good friend from the Bronx, Shay Mac entertained the group. Shay put on a terrific show in the Harlequin Lounge. The lounge was just the right size, for this first wave of guest. When Shay took a break, our newly discovered band “Sullivan’s Jack” played a special sneak preview. The boys came up a day early and made themselves at home. Lead singer Kevin Rehill quickly impressed the crowd with his powerful voice. When he belted out their original tune “A Rebel Song” everyone knew to expect big things from these young lads. The preview was indeed well received, and a great warm-up for things to come. Shay Mac later finished, and of course we all stayed out too late on this first night. Friday afternoon meant it was time for our traditional Irish Coffee Welcoming Party. As the next wave of guest arrived, they heard the now fully equipped Sullivan’s Jack Band. These fellas are apparently used to keeping late hours! Shay Mac also returned, after finding his guitar, the late hours might have slowed Shay down a tad. By late afternoon the fresh faces of the Tommy O’Callaghan & the Moonshiners Band arrived. These guys are a favorite of our Emerald travelers. Their combination of Irish songs, and Rock n’ Roll kept the crowd swaying for the rest of the party. After dinner and the raffles the kids were kept busy with the indoor pool, lobby games, and the arcade room. The bands played in the nightclub till the wee hours.

Saturday morning at breakfast another one of our favorites arrived, Macaroni the Clown. He went table to table, and delighted the kids with his animal balloons. After breakfast he put on his fun filled show in the East Room. The youngsters, and their parents shared many laughs during Macaroni’s outrageous skits. By late morning and throughout the day many were bundled up for the cold. With the frigid weather back the hotel’s outdoor amenities were in full operation. After lunch our old friends from the PBA sponsored an afternoon party in the spacious Tennis Center. Unfortunately PBA President Paddy Lynch was a last minute cancellation, due to some pressing union business in the city. Brian Mooney, Desi Stafford and Bob Iaboni did a superb job hosting the mid-day gathering. The PBA is always one of our biggest supporters, and we appreciate all they do for the Emerald Society. The Moonshiners started the day’s music, and quickly hooked the crowd. The band seems to have as much fun as our guest, and they have made many friends over the last few years that they have played for us. The Tennis Center is a very large room, and easily holds our group comfortably. When the NYPD Pipe & Drum Band enters the room, and marchers behind the Color Guard that is holding the Stars & Stripes along with the Tri-Colors of Ireland, it is a powerful sight. The crowd’s reaction is always to move towards the dance floor, where the Band ends it’s march, and they continue to play. Their sets of songs are made up of Irish, and American classics, with many on hand singing along to their favorites. The Band always receives the full attention of the entire crowd. The young kids stop and stare at these giant men, who appear to be soldiers. As the Band plays, this is another special moment among the many activities throughout the Winter Weekend. Now with everyone focused, it was just the right time to make a few special presentations, to our most loyal friends and guests. As the Pipes & Drums stood by, plaques were presented to four individuals. President Jay Gerrity along with Chairmen Tom Sullivan, and Timmy Bergin called upon Charter Member Bill McNeely, Mike Harrington, Debbie O’Connor and from the Nevele staff J. R. Lebron. There was no doubt that all four recipients were completely caught off guard by this acknowledgement. The foursome’s help is truly appreciated by the Society. The Pipe Band was cheered after their final set, and as they marched off. The music then continued with the Garda Band from Rhode Island taking the stage. Darren Delaney and Tommy Underhill both members of the R. I. State Police, along with the rest of the band sang some great rebel songs. They kept the music going for the rest of this fun afternoon. The Nevele hosted a cocktail party that followed the PBA Party, and it was well received by the spirited crowd. There were plenty of shrimp, and other finger food partaken. Young John Ryan, of the Jersey Ryan Clan, set up shop with his magic show in the rear of the room. There John put on an astonishing act that boggled the throng. The show started, as something for the kids, but in no time there was plenty of adults amazed by young Mr. Ryan. John certainly can work a crowd, and his show is truly incredible. As the Garda Band played their final tunes it was time to head off to dinner.

After dining, and more raffles it was time to partake in our Ice Cream Party. Both young and old enjoyed this sweet time together, devouring their Sundaes. For those who don’t come with a sweet tooth, but enjoy a good stogie there was the Cigar Room. Board Officers George Anderson and Dennis Gallagher hosted the smoked filled refuge. It was off limits to the kids, and was a great hiding spot for the dads and the moms. In the nightclub the Sullivan’s Jack Band, well rested by nightfall put on another great music session. The band first helped out with our Young Irish Dance Revue, which was a big, hit last year. This year besides the dozens of pretty young Colleens we had one young gentleman. Jackie Steiner did a nice job organizing the step-dancers. The lassies looked beautiful in their fancy dance dresses. Sullivan’s Jack played reels and jigs while the kid’s starred in the nightclub’s spotlight. There were many proud parents, as the kids received many rounds of applause. Sullivan’s Jack then continued with their exciting show for their many new fans. Later the D. J.s Steve and Donnie, from AV2M took over in the lounge. They played on with their own version of the late, late, late show.

Sunday morning after breakfast and the nightclub was again filled. This time however everyone was awaiting Father Robert Romano, our NYPD Chaplain. Fr. Romano traveled all the way from Brooklyn to offer Mass. He had a large supporting cast of altar servers, Eucharistic Ministers, readers, musicians and ushers. All of these positions were filled by our guests who volunteered to help. Fr. Romano always makes himself available to the Emeralds, and has offered Sunday Mass at our Weekends for the last few years. Fr. Romano with his keen sense of humor has a way of making everyone feel comfortable, his “Emerald congregation” looks forward to his Mass, and this makes for another one of those special times for us. It’s nice to remember our religious tradition on a Sunday, as we celebrate many of our other traditions throughout our weekend stay. Moonshiner Joe O’Brien once again lent a helping hand, along with The Garda’s Tommy Underhill. These are two gentlemen that are always doing something extra for us. After Mass and lunch some of our guest departed, after all some people had to go back to work! The rest were able to continue to enjoy the outdoor attractions or the Kids Carnival in the Tennis Center. A new feature this year was performances by our “Young Irish Musicians and Singers”. The youngsters took center stage in the Harlequin Lounge, and put on solo performances. The show starred bagpipers, tin-whistlers, a harpist, and a violinist and finished with a singer. The sounds of all that great music drew a standing room only audience by the time it drew to a close. The children were all reintroduced, and they received a tremendous ovation for their efforts. It sure made their parents extremely proud. Terry McGeever organized the show, and Tommy Underhill and Eric Neff from The Garda Band helped with the accompanying music. Thanks to all of those who participated, and we look forward to next years show. The “Guinness Afternoon” continued, as the draft flowed, and The Garda Band played a rousing repertoire of rebel rhymes. Sunday afternoon was indeed an outstanding time, and before you knew it dinnertime arrived.

After dinner there was more fun for the kids. To celebrate President’s Day our traditional Patriot’s Parade was staged. All the young boys and girls were handed red, white and blue hats, along with American Flags. Led by The Garda Band the kids first sang a medley of patriotic songs. The kids then marched behind a threesome of our Bagpipers, as they proudly strode through the hallways. The short parade was a fun time for all. For the older kids who were able to stay up there were many choices. Many opted for the pool, some the arcade, while many were busy with the lobby games hosted by Anthony from the Nevele staff. The Garda Band still had one more show to go. After their great afternoon show, it didn’t seem possible that they could re-ignite the crowd to that earlier level. Things started off somewhat subdued during their first set. But then Darren Delaney called up NYPD legend retired Detective Bill McNeely to the stage. Bill sang a few songs, and joked with his many friends huddled in the lounge. Bill certainly warmed up the audience, and it was nice to see him back after his recent illness. The crowd now enlivened was ready for more fun. By midnight it was the great American sing-a-long. When the band played “Piano Man” everybody was singing and swaying. Suddenly a circle formed made up of better then fifty people, with their arms around each other, all doing their best Billy Joel impersonation. The fun continued for the rest of the show, with many more great songs. The Garda Band sure proved, that the only thing better than one good party, is two good parties a day! We still don’t know when the Sunday night festivities ended, maybe the D. J.s might!

By the time Monday’s checkout arrived many new friendship were made. It appeared that the young and the not so young had a fun, and memorable holiday together. The music was great and all the bands put on terrific shows. The kids showed us some wonderful talent with their song, and dance revues. Outdoor opportunities enabled many a chance to learn or improve on the skiing and skating skills. We hope everyone enjoyed this Irish Party and that they can return for many more.

The February 6, 2006 General Meeting of the NYPD Emerald Society was held at St. Andrew R. C. Church, in Manhattan. President Jay Gerrity covered news on many of our upcoming events. Event chairmen were called upon to report on these future activities. Included was the "sold out" 41st Annual Winter Weekend at the Nevele Grande Resort, February 16th thru 20th. The Annual Dinner Dance at Leonard’s of Great Neck, Friday February 24th, Timmy Bergin is the chairman, and the PBA’s Desi Stafford being honored as our Man-of-the-Year. On Sunday March 5th the Staten Island St. Patrick’s Day Parade will be held. Afterwards there will be a post-parade celebration at St. Peter R. C. Church. The following Sunday the Bronx Parade in Throg’s Neck, is scheduled. NYPD marchers will assemble that morning at Lafayette and E. Tremont Avenues.

Next was the news of March 17th, the number 1 event on the Emerald Society calendar each year! President Gerrity advised that NYPD marchers will assemble at 10:30 hours, at 44th St. west of 5th Ave. Uniform of the day is in order: white gloves, winter coat and 8 point cap. Retirees are welcomed to march behind our uniformed members. The famous Post-Parade Party will be at Pier 88, at the Passenger Ship Terminal, on the Westside. Members were reminded no children are allowed at this gathering. The Michael Sheahan Band will provide entertainment, along with our own NYPD Pipes & Drums.

Past President Joe Keenan reported on the Hurricane Katrina Benefit. The fundraiser was for New Orleans Police Officers and sponsored by the NYPD Emerald Society, along with the National Conference of Law Enforcement Emerald Societies. The January 7th event was held at Mount St. Michael High School in the Bronx, and was a tremendous success. Keenan was very happy to report that $26,000. was raised. Many NYPD fraternal groups participated, and we are truly grateful for their aid. Those who attended enjoyed the Michael Sheahan Band who put on a great show. The NYPD Pipes & Drums also treated the crowd to an outstanding performance, on that special night. Mike Murphy did a superb job as usual, organizing this night and making it so successful. He was supported by the Emerald Board, and many other volunteers.

With the close of the meeting, the membership had plenty of activities to look forward to attending, in the coming months. There certainly will be many days ahead, to see our Green & Gold Banner across the city and beyond!

High School Scholarship Exam, January 21, 2006

The NYPD Emerald Society conducted the Annual High School Scholarship Exam on Saturday, January 21, 2006. Once again the test was held at the Police Academy. Chairman Rich Wall and Co-Chairman Tom Glynn did a fine job coordinating the morning event. They were assisted by a large number of Board Officers, who helped out in many ways. Our dedicated friends from St. Frances de Sales Parish, Sr. Patricia Chelius, Sr. Paul Marita and Sr. Patricia Walsh also returned to oversee the competition. The three nuns assured that both a proper Catholic School decorum, and classroom integrity was maintained, throughout the two-hour examination. The eager students first assembled in the auditorium, with their moms and dads. President Jay Gerrity briefly addressed the group, he thanked them for getting up early on a Saturday morning, and making the trek into Manhattan. He then wished them all good luck. As the kids made their way to the classroom, the parents struck up conversations with old and new acquaintances. It appeared that many of the parents were retired members, and it was good to see that they have continued to be part of the Society. This year over forty students participated in this challenging exam. Our members recognize this program, as one of more significant benefits in keeping their dues up to date. Chairman Rich Wall expects to announce the scholarship winners at the February 6th General Meeting.

Hurricane Katrina Benefit, January 7, 2006

After Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans, and many telephone calls were made back and forth, the National Conference contacted Jim Anderson, the NCLEES delegate for the Metro Police Emerald Society for New Orleans, to see how they could help. Jim stated that many Police Officers had lost their homes, and all their belongings yet continued to go to work, because "that’s what Police Officers do." In this case they were not only Police Officers, but victims also. Dennis Long, Jersey City PD, the National President, appointed 3rd V.P. Joe Keenan (past president), as National Chairman for the Disaster Fund. In addition to a National campaign Joe went to President Mike Murphy, and the Emerald Board of Officers for assistance. Mike grabbed the bull by the horns, and while Joe was addressing the Committee of Police Societies, Mike was arranging for a “Cops for Cops” benefit at Mt. Saint Michael’s in the Bronx. On Saturday night January 7th the Emerald Society hosted the benefit with food, beverage, and music. Our good friend, retired NYPD Detective Michael Sheahan and his Band provided their great show. The ever reliable Emerald Society Pipes and Drums put on a heartwarming performance. Those in attendance had a great time, and the benefit was successful in excess of $25,000. Dennis Long, Bill Tinker, New Haven PD and National Sgt. at Arms, along with Jim Anderson and Police Officer Jeff Jacobs form New Orleans PD were also present. Jim and Jeff were honored, when the Pipe Band had them stand as Honorary Drum Majors, during a musical tribute. At this time the National has raised almost $70,000 that will be distributed to Police Officers who had a total loss. The Disaster Fund will be closed at the May 2006 meeting in Washington DC. Anybody wishing can still contribute to the NCLEES/ NYPD Emerald Society Disaster Fund at 2121 New York Ave, Brooklyn, New York 11210.

January, 2006 General Meeting
more photos
On Monday January 2, 2006 the NYPD Emerald Society held it’s general meeting at Bishop Ford High School in Brooklyn. President John “Jay” Gerrity presided over his first meeting, and he was warmly received on this cold and rainy night. President Gerrity seemed well prepared in his new leadership role, just two days into his term. He thanked immediate Past-President Michael Murphy, for continuing to serve on the Board, as Treasurer. Our new 1st Vice President Timothy Bergin looked quite comfortable, at the Executive Board table, as the transition begins within the Society. Marianna Murray moved into one of the more demanding positions on the Board. She will take over as financial secretary, and will handle all membership related matters. With thousands of active, as well as retired members, Marianna should be among the busiest of the Board’s dedicated representatives.

Among the leading issues discussed during the meeting, was the upcoming 10-13 Hurricane Katrina Benefit. This event to assist members of the New Orleans Police Department, is taking place next weekend, on Saturday January 7th. Two of the event planners, Past Presidents Joe Keenan and Mike Murphy, are hoping for a large show of support, from throughout the entire NYPD. The benefit will be held at Mount St. Michael High School, in the Bronx. A coalition of support comes from the PBA, SBA, LBA and CEA, as well as other fraternal groups, all are united in this Cop-to-Cop Fundraiser. All money raised, will go to New Orleans Police Officers who remained on the job, in spite of their own great personal losses, brought on by Hurricane Katrina, and the devastating flooding that followed. Many of these officers lost their homes, and were separated from their loved ones. These brave men and women deserve our support, and they are a credit to all law enforcement. Keenan expects a couple of NOPD members to be on hand for the Benefit. Our good friends from the Michael Sheahan Band will be up in the Bronx, sharing their great music. It should not only be a worthy cause Saturday night, but also a fun-filled time. A large contingent from the NYPD Pipes & Drums will also make the night memorable.

High School Scholarship Chairman Rich Wall reported on the upcoming exam. On Saturday January 21st Emerald member’s 8th grade children will be taking the test at the Police Academy. By next month’s meeting the scholarship winners will be announced. Tim Bergin and Tom Sullivan advised on the Winter Weekend scheduled for Presidents Weekend in February. They said the trip was nearly sold out, and by next week that all rooms would be booked, at the Fallsview Hotel at the Nevele Grande Resort. They also announced that the 2nd Annual Summer Getaway would take place July 13th thru 17th, and to make it your vacation pick. Gerrity and Bergin reminded the group that the Annual Dinner Dance is set for Friday February 24th at Leonard’s of Great Neck. PBA Board Officer Desi Stafford will be honored as the Man-of-the-Year at the Dinner Dance. There should be a large turn out, and everyone should get their tickets soon.

As always the Brooklyn meeting was a good time. The nasty weather certainly was a factor, but good food and good company made the trip to Brooklyn worth it. The 2006 Membership Cards sold well at the door. After the meeting ended, many in the crowd looked for a good place to watch the Notre Dame game. As for next month our own “Crime- Fighting-Irish” will return to Manhattan for the February meeting.
