Passing of our Past NYPD Emerald Society President Timothy Bergin, December 20, 2020

The NYPD Emerald Society mourns the loss of our Past President Timothy Bergin, on Sunday December 20, 2020. He was at home and apparently suffered a heart attack. Timmy was just 47 years old and his sudden passing has shocked his grieving family and so many friends and neighbors. On September 11, 2001 Timmy responded to the World Trade Center site in lower Manhattan, after first reporting for duty at his Brooklyn North Precinct. During the ensuing weeks after the terrorist attack, he spent countless hours at the toxic ruins, as rescue and recovery operations were fiercely underway. He was always honored to have served his city and country during that dreadful period in New York City.

Timmy was the first-born child of Eileen and Richard Bergin and he was raised in the close-knit neighborhood of Maspeth, Queens. As the family grew, he was followed by 5 younger brothers: Richard, Patrick, Edward (Teddy), Kevin and Sean along with his sister, affectionally dubbed Little Eileen. The Bergin household was always bustling with activity and it was a place where all were welcomed. With his Dad an NYPD Detective and an Emerald Society Board Officer, the Bergin's grew up attending numerous events the organization offered. Ballgames, Dinner Dances, Winter and Summer Weekend trips to the Catskills were always special times for all. For many years, The Bergin's were not just at the party, they were the party, bringing laughter and fun. Irish Step-Dancing featuring the trio of Sean, Kevin and Eileen would always rouse a crowd of fans, as Timmy, Richie, Patrick and Teddy led everyone in an explosion of applause. When staying local in Maspeth, life was celebrated at their 2nd home, O'Neill's Restaurant, always a hospitable haven to relax. With his Dad as his role model, it was no surprise that Timmy would one day become one of the Boys-in-Blue. As soon as Timmy raised his right hand and was sworn into the ranks of the NYPD, his next right-of-passage was buying a 1994 Emerald Society Membership Card. As the old saying goes, Timmy Bergin took to the Job, like a duck to water. The same adage applied to his being an Emerald, as he worked his way through positions on the Board. A truly proud moment for the family came when he was sworn in as the Society's President at the Dinner Dance in 2008. It was 16 years earlier, in 1992 that his Dad was sworn in as President. Mrs. Eileen Bergin went from Emerald First Lady to First Mom. Timmy's entire life revolved around his loving family. He was honored to be the oldest son of Eileen and Richie. He also appreciated all that came with being the Big Brother to 5 rough and tumble younger brothers. His love and kindness to his Little Eileen was something most treasured by both. Summer road trips to the beach in Ocean City, Maryland were full of happy times for all. As the years flew by and with the arrival of nieces and nephews Olivia, Connor, Peyton, Paige, Paisley, Cole, Emmett, Emily, and Jenna, he became a dedicated uncle. Being a Big Brother no-doubt made the transition to Uncle Timmy an easy fit. He was so good at it, he was chosen three times to be a Godfather. Playing Santa Claus for children really enhanced his image, as well as his warm bear hugs. Tim was a life-long sports fan, he and Patrick had season tickets to Madison Square Garden for Ranger games. He rooted for the Yankees and the Jets. Family legend has it, that he promised his Grandfather he would always be a Giants fan just like him. In recent years Timmy had an enviable security position, as he was a bodyguard for the entertainer Taylor Swift. He remained tight-lipped, regarding her privacy and safety. That assignment was a lot different from his days as a young Rookie Cop in the 83rd Precinct patrolling Bushwick, Brooklyn.

Timmy like many others, experienced some bumps in the road, as he met life's challenges. He always seemed to remain positive and was thankful for all the good things in his life. There is no doubt that the love he received from his family made him the man that he was. He was quick to return that love, to all those he cared for the most. May Our Lord Jesus Christ Welcome Timmy and Bless His Family.

Our sincerest condolences go out to the entire Bergin Family. May He Rest in Peace.

Timothy Bergin is survived by his Loving Parents Eileen and Richard, his Loving Siblings and their Spouses Richard and Lisa, Patrick and Marianne, Edward and Gina, Kevin, Sean and Jeanette, Eileen and Steve. He leaves behind nieces and nephews Olivia, Connor, Cole, Emmett, Peyton, Paige, Paisley, Emily and Jenna.
