PASSING OF PHIL THOMPSON

The NYPD Emerald Society mourns the death of our retired Member Philip Thompson age 73. He passed away peacefully on Monday September 14, 2015 while at the Veterans Hospital in St. Albans Queens. For the past 20 years Thompson was the Drum Major of our Pipes & Drums Band. He succeeded the legendary Finbar Devine at that esteemed position back in 1995. He was a member of the Band for 43 years, starting first in the Color Guard. Phil came on the job in 1968, his assignments included the 43rd, 79th and 66th Precincts while on patrol. His last few years were spent assigned to Health Service before he retired in 1988. As Drum Major he led our world famous Pipes & Drums up 5th Avenue on St. Patrick's Day and during official NYPD ceremonies including promotions, retirements and dedications. He also brought dignity and honor in the most difficult of times to our fallen, while stoically leading the way at Police Officers funerals. The camaraderie he shared with his Brothers in the Band were among the best times of Phil's life. Road trips across the USA and to other parts of the world were always happy occasions for this fraternity he loved being part of. Sadly as he became seriously ill, the last few years he was mostly confined to hospital stays. Visits by old bandmates would lift his spirits and bring back good memories. He died peacefully and now Phil Thompson's good name will live on in the annals of his beloved Pipes & Drums.
