Cardinal Timothy Dolan Receives a New NYPD Emerald Society Jacket
March 3, 2014

On Monday March 3, 2014 an NYPD Emerald Society committee met with Cardinal Timothy Dolan and presented him with a new Emerald Society jacket. The latest edition to the Cardinal’s wardrobe is a navy blue jacket, featuring our famous Shamrock & Shield logo. Emblazoned on the jacket’s front, in bright red is the title “Cardinal”. A few years back, then Bishop Dolan was given a similar jacket by the Emeralds. His brand new jacket honors his elevation in our Catholic Church hierarchy. It took some planning, but we finally were able to catch up with New York City’s good shepherd at Our Lady of Pity Church, in Staten Island. Board Officers Eddie Patterson, Greg Naeder and Tom Sullivan had the privilege of making the presentation. Cardinal Dolan was enthusiastically appreciative of his new Emerald garment, as he gave out grateful handshakes and bear hugs to Patterson, Naeder and Sullivan. The Cardinal’s robust personality and cheerfulness are the trademarks of his outstanding reputation. His sincerity rang out as he promised to wear the new jacket honoring the men and women of our Society. Our Member will no doubt recall the Cardinal faithfully wearing his original jacket in Italy and the Vatican, in the days leading up to his elevation by Pope Benedict XVI in 2012. He was photographed and interviewed numerous times by international news agencies while wearing that jacket. Before attending to other business this night, Cardinal Dolan was kind enough to bless a white colored Christening outfit, adorn with green Celtic Crosses, which will be worn on the day of President Karyn McCormack’s new baby’s Baptism. Sure enough the next morning beautiful little Mariead Joan McCormack was born to Karyn and Peter. That should make for an extra special day when Mariead wears her outfit. One more request was made of the Cardinal, as he was handed a note asking for his Prayers, regarding an ailing Emerald Member. Retired Police Officer Kenny Hammill (ESU Truck-5) is seriously ill in a Staten Island Hospital. The Cardinal assured the friend, that Kenny would receive his Prayers for recovery. It was later learned that after leaving Our Lady of Pity, Cardinal Dolan headed right to the hospital and surprised Kenny and his wife Desma with a bedside visit. The stopover of conversation, Prayers and a Blessing was uplifting for the Hammills and others touched by the news of the Cardinal’s words and presence. Hopefully Kenny and Desma will be able to act on the Cardinal’s invitation to visit St. Patrick’s Cathedral in the near future. Many thanks go out to Detective Gene Kenny for making the rendezvous with His Eminence possible. Also thanks to Megan Aileen Sullivan for assisting with photos.
