Passing of Past President James “Barney” Ferguson
May 31, 2014

The NYPD Emerald Society mourns the passing of our beloved Past President James “Barney” Ferguson 77, on Saturday, May 31st while in hospice care at Calvary Hospital in the Bronx. In recent years Barney faced more than his fair share of medical challenges as his health declined. But the tough Irishman born and bred in the Bronx neighborhood of Mott Haven had a knack for overcoming serious illnesses as well as other difficulties that come with age. Barney continued to attend our monthly meetings whenever possible, relying on old and trusted friends for transportation back and forth. He was always a welcomed figure at our Emerald events enjoying the camaraderie of young and old members. His knowledge and recollection of our Society’s long history exemplified his status as our respected elder statesman. His time in the NYPD started back in 1957 with a career that spanned assignments in Manhattan and Bronx precincts. Most of his twenty plus years on the police force were spent in the Detective Bureau. His street smart senses and attention to detail were part of the skills that propelled his outstanding reputation in the world of criminal investigation. His bosses and peers admired his work ethic, as he earned the rank of Detective 2nd Grade. His police career culminated with his prestigious assignment to the elite Manhattan South Homicide Squad. After 22 years on the job Barney retired in 1979. However his involvement in the Irish American community of New York and various police fraternities never took a retirement. For many years he was the go-to-guy for a variety of groups that needed the proper guidance in their goal to form their own local Emerald Societies. Many of these organizations owe their existence and successes to the blueprint Barney provided them, along with his sound counseling. Among the many recognitions he received, the most cherished might have been Barney’s selection as the 1978 NYC St. Patrick’s Day Parade Grand Marshal. Leading the Irish up 5th Avenue was a remarkable achievement for a man who took so much pride in his heritage and the city he served. For many years he was the only member of the NYPD to receive that honor. In 2008 Barney was featured in the Irish Echo newspaper as a Best-of-the-Bronx Honoree. His roots in his native borough as well as his celebrity status in the Irish community was the catalyst for his selection. Barney was indeed a man for all seasons as he led many other organizations as their president including the County Leitrim Society, the NYPD Retired Detectives Association, AOH Division 3 and the Grand Council of Emerald Societies. He also served on many boards including the DEA, Anchor Club and Knights of Columbus. Barney Ferguson was indeed a standout and charismatic individual who touched so many lives. His engaging personality flavored with his NY Irish upbringing could certainly “charm the birds out of the trees”. He will no doubt be missed both near and afar, while remembered fondly for years to come.
