Passing of Captain Robert Hogan
August 23, 2014

Very sad news to report, our longtime NYPD Emerald Society member retired Captain Robert Hogan, a distinguished member of our Pipe & Drum Band was tragically killed in a boating accident on Wednesday, August 20th. Bob a boating enthusiast, was at a north shore Long Island marina when an explosion occurred on his vessel. It is believed that a buildup of combustible fumes inside the boat led to the devastating explosion. His good friend and fellow NYPD retiree, ironically with whom he shared the same name Robert Hogan, was also aboard the craft. The friend was heroically rescued by marina personnel after he was pulled from the water after going overboard. He was removed to the hospital with what has been described as non-life threatening injuries. Bob Hogan was a very active member of the Pipe Band throughout his 5 decades in its ranks. He proudly served as both the Bandmaster as well as the Pipe Major before retiring from the job. Throughout his retirement years Bob remained an elder statesman for the Band, he could always be counted on for sound advice and his devotion to his bandmates was unsurpassed. His sudden loss has certainly shaken his comrades in the Band and his tragic departure will be felt for years to come. Outstanding gentlemen like Bob Hogan don’t come along often, the NYPD Emerald Society and Pipe Band were blessed to have him.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years Rosemary and 3 adult children Grace, Colleen and Michael.
