Death of John Coughlan
June 9, 2011

The NYPD Emerald Society is saddened with the news of the passing of Mr. John Coughlan 76, on Wednesday, June 8 after a long illness. He was the proud father of three of our Emerald Society Members Brian (Bomb Squad) and Jimmy (Major Case) both from our Pipe & Drum Band, as well as Dennis (ESU K-9). Coughlan was born in Kilmahill County Clare, Ireland. In 1950, at the young age of 16 he immigrated to America. He followed the path of countless other arriving Irishmen from that era, when he later joined the US Army. He eagerly served his new country during the time of the Korean War. After being honorably discharged from the military he became a US citizen. Civil Service was his next calling when he became a Subway Motorman. This was another well known haven for the Irish as they ran the trains through the city's vast transit system. John and his wife Mary would settle and make their home in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. Through the years they were blessed with nine off springs. The Coughlan Clan was kept busy with the many activities in a bustling Our Lady of Perpetual Help parish. John played a vital role at OLPH where he founded both the school's Soccer and Baseball Little Leagues. He also served as president of a local neighborhood group called the Kings Association. In his retirement years John and Mary left their beloved Brooklyn and settled in New Jersey. They enjoyed spending time with their two dozen plus grandkids. It's a sure bet that this gentleman, who arrived from across a vast ocean many years ago, is now proudly looking down with immense pride on his cherished family. John Coughlan is survived by his devoted wife Mary, six sons Brian, Jimmy, Dennis, Gerard (NYCDOC), John and Kevin, three daughters Frances, Mary and Teresa also twenty five adoring grandchildren.
