Death of Pat Roper, Irish Entertainer
August, 2010

The NYPD Emerald Society mourns the passing of an old friend and beloved musical entertainer Pat Roper. He died suddenly last week while at home in his apartment. Pat as many will remember was a mainstay at numerous Emerald Society events during the 1980's and 1990's. His repertoire of Irish sing-a-longs and American patriotic songs always made for great times. Pat played at all our major functions including Winter Weekends in the Catskills, dinner dances and St. Patrick's Day parties. It seemed every spirited show would feature a finale, with a long line of Emeralds following a high-flying American Flag across the dance floor. Pat would be on stage leading a chorus of God Bless America as everyone would be on their feet enjoying the revelry. Pat was born in Glasgow, Scotland his mother's native land and his father was from Donegal, Ireland. After graduating college he arrived in the USA in 1973. It was at the Great Irish Fair in Coney Island, Brooklyn that Pat was first introduced as "The King of the Irish Festivals". That title was no doubt earned through his energized performances and the endearing rapport he had with his audience. Pat Roper will always be remembered by us all, for the great fun and good times he provided legions of Irish music lovers.
