Over the past few months, the Emerald Society has held a number of Fantastic events. On January 20th over fifty sleepy eyed young Emeralds turned out at the police academy for the high school scholarship examination. The competition was strong, but with over twenty thousand dollars in scholarships awarded each year well worth the effort.

Once again, the annual winter weekend was a sellout with nearly one thousand people in attendance. The merriment began on Thursday evening and did not end until some time on Monday. I wish all weekends lasted five days.

On Friday February 23, our 53rd annual Dinner Dance was held at Leonard's of Great Neck. The 2006-2007 Board of Officers were installed in their respective positions. PBA Manhattan North Trustee Desmond Stafford was honored as our "2006 Irishman of the Year". A capacity crowd was on their feet to congratulate Desi for this well deserved honor. I wish to thank everyone who supported this event whether by attending or placing an ad in the Scholarship Journal. It is the support of these events that allows our scholarship program to continue to be so successful.

On Saint Patrick's Day I had the distinct honor and privilege to lead the Finest son and daughters of Erin up Fifth Avenue. Upon completion of the parade it was on to Pier 88 for the post parade festivities. Once again the Pipe Band sent the crowd into a frenzy with their afternoon performance. My hat is off to everyone that lent a helping hand, Thank you!

The Emerald Society hit the road holding the May meeting at Saint Sebastian's in Woodside Queens. The primary focus of the meeting was to present the scholarship winners with their awards. The night was truly a family event with lots of proud parents on hand. I want to congratulate all of the Scholarship winners and wish you well in your new high schools.

The annual trip to Ireland is now sold out with dozens of friends and members getting together for the pilgrimage to the land of saints and scholars. There are still many upcoming Emerald events including; the three day golf outing, summer getaway, Yankee game, West Point Army football, and a return of our one day golf outing.
