Message from Michael Murphy, President
Fall, 2005

Greetings from the Emerald Society.

I hope everyone had an enjoyable summer. In July, the Emerald Society traveled up to the Nevele for our first annual Summer Getaway. There were numerous activities for the whole family. There was also some nice relaxation time built in to our summer itinerary. The time spent at the pool, with a wonderful backdrop of live Irish music, was the most memorable. I expect the summer getaway to grow and become one of our best known events. Thanks to all who contributed their time to make it such a huge success.

On a sadder note we have all watched in horror as hurricane Katrina battered the gulf coast. It has been reported that about 80% of the New Orleans police officers were left homeless. They continued to work and save lives of the residents of their city not knowing the fate of their own family and friends. Their courage is well documented in the media. I felt helpless as I was glued to my television set at every available moment.

It was not that long ago that the rest of the country watched in awe in wake of the 911 attacks. The outpouring of support from Police Departments from all over the country was overwhelming. It is now time for us to return the favor. Various relief agencies and charities have received donations of close to a Billion Dollars to help in the relief effort.

The Emerald Society in conjunction with the National Conference of Law Enforcement Emerald Societies has set up a fund that will directly assist the Police Officers of New Orleans. I ask that our members and friends dig deep into their pocket and donate as much or as little as you can. You can take comfort in the fact that every dollar donated will go directly to our brother and sister officers in New Orleans. It is our duty to take care of our own and especially those that came to aid in our time of need. The information about the fund can be found in this newsletter and on our website. I also ask that you pass this along to all you family and friends together we can make a difference. As a reminder all donations to the fund will be tax deductible.

In conjunction with the Disaster Fund. The Emerald Society with the cooperation of all the fraternal and religious organizations in the department is attempting to hold a fundraiser.

(10-13 Cops to Cops Benefit)
We are in the early stage of organizing this event. We are searching for a venue centrally located in the city. If you have any suggestions please contact us. Information for the benefit will be posted on our website as it becomes available. Other fraternal organizations have already received donations from their members and I thank them for their support.

As we head into the fall and winter please keep all the victims of hurricane Katrina in our prayers.

Fraternally,

Michael Murphy
President, NYPD Emerald Society
