Greetings from the Emerald Society.
I hope that your summer and fall was fun and enjoyable. The Society was very busy during the last few months.
In June the Annual Three Day Golf Outing was held at the Nevele Grande Resort. With the picture perfect weather, a "Grande" time was had by all. It was the first time that I had ever golfed. It was said that I was not too bad for a first time golfer. I suspect they have been less forthcoming with their honest opinion. Again, I would like to apologize to the other golfers that were behind or to the side, as I eagerly sent the small white ball in directions that could not be duplicated by the best of golfers. The event was well organized by Joe Keenan, Ed Connolly and Jay Gerrity. The staff at the Nevele was accommodating and pleasant as usual. I can't wait for next year. I promise I will try and practice at least once to avoid having to give out helmets as our souvenir.
On July 10, 2004 the Emeralds made the annual pilgrimage to the Mecca of baseball, Yankee Stadium. Old Timers Day was held under a backdrop of beautiful skies and jubilant fans. A tailgate party started the day and ended it as well. A great time was all but assured from the weather, the food and Yankees winning. Marybeth Colby, Brendan Nolan along with John and Chris Fitzgerald provided us with plenty of good food and cold beverage. The kids had a wonderful day and are looking forward to next year.
September was also a fun filled month. The Pipe Band held their Annual Memorial concert on 9/11. It was a wonderful evening at Town Hall as the Irish filled the streets and concert hall for this special event. The performances were outstanding and moving. A march was held after the finale to the "after party" at the Park Central New York Hotel. Congratulations to the band for such a successful and enjoyable evening.
The annual Run for Fun was held on September 18th in the Rockaway's. At least 60 runners braved the stormy weather for this event. The turnout was very good despite the wind and rain. The trophy ceremony was held at the Irish Circle. I want to congratulate Tim Black for his first place finish in the 19 and under category. Again this event was well organized by Brendan Dolan and Gary Rudolph.
In October the Annual Army Football Trip was held. About 100 of our members were in attendance. All were treated to a fantastic tailgate party and a win from the Army Team. George Anderson and Tim Black did a wonderful job organizing the trip. A grand time was had by all. Remember to book this one early next year. I apologize to those that were turned away, you missed a great day.
As the Holidays approach I wish everyone the best. I am looking forward to seeing as many members as possible at our upcoming events. The annual Ireland trip has been moved to the spring. I t will be held during Easter Week. I am sure it will be very enjoyable celebrating Easter in the Emerald Isle. We also have the Winter Weekend and Dinner Dance right around the corner.
If anyone has questions about the Society please feel free to give us a call, drop a letter or email us. Our board member email addresses are available on the Emerald Society website (www.nypdemeralds.com). Please take the time to visit the site. You can view all the photos from our past events and get the information on the upcoming events.
The membership cards for 2005 will be available at the beginning of December. I urge all members to return the membership application as soon as possible. With your help we can avoid a backlog of our system that usually occurs around February.
Fraternally,
Michael Murphy President, NYPD Emerald Society
